Since time immemorial, original arched windows have been used to decorate both the architectural creations of great masters and the homes of wealthy citizens. Today, arched windows have become almost mandatory element many country houses. Much of this popularity is due to the harmonious combination of the shape of arched windows with the architecture of a particular building.

A modern window manufacturing plant can provide the sophisticated cottage owner with the most various options, and the use of additional decorative elements gives arched structures wide possibilities for creating exquisite interiors and facades.

Despite the fact that the shape of arched structures can be very original, one cannot lose sight of the fact that a window, even an arched one, must reliably protect from the vagaries of nature. Therefore, in a reliable and reputable company, even despite the persuasion of the customer to do “something like that,” they will not neglect production requirements. In addition, when ordering, the buyer must take into account the more labor-intensive production process and the preliminary design stage taking into account wind loads, which ultimately affect the cost and production time of arched windows.

Arched windows: varieties

The most popular among owners of country houses are following types arched windows.

Semicircular arched window.

Lancet arched windows The buildings are decorated in a characteristic Gothic style.

Moorish arched windows They are peculiar arches, the appearance of which resembles a horseshoe.

The process of making arched windows

A plastic profile blank of a certain size is heated to approximately 130°C. The soft and pliable part is then fed onto a molding table with a contour. Today, in the production of arched windows, two main methods of heating PVC profiles are used.

The first, so-called wet method, was invented earlier. It involves immersing the profile on certain time into a hot glycerin bath. The dry method, a newer one, involves heating a plastic blank in a special thermal chamber. You can bend both a white profile and a laminated one.

The second method is less expensive and is more often used in most industries. Of course, a PVC profile bent into an arch cannot be reinforced. Therefore, for the maximum sizes of such window designs There are some restrictions.

Decorative features

Although arched windows look very original in the interior, they are trying to give them an even more attractive appearance. For this, in addition to the already traditional lamination, beautiful decorative elements are used, for example, “layout” (shpros), which are placed either inside or with outside double-glazed windows and can also be of different colors.

Recently, the installation of tinted double-glazed windows, stained glass and patterned glass in arched windows has become increasingly popular among owners of country houses. All this mirror-stained-glass-patterned splendor looks great both outside and in the interior.

In addition to visible beauty, practicality is added. Tinted windows can partially reflect Sun rays, and through the stained glass windows and patterns it is difficult to see what is happening in the interior.

WINDOW PLASTIC

Increasingly, people building country houses and dachas express a desire to install arched windows. In terms of functionality, they are not inferior to ordinary ones, but at the same time they look very impressive.

Arched windows, photos of which you have probably seen many times, are classic and arched. Let's look at them in more detail:

  1. Often, classic arched windows, popularly called “solar” windows, are installed in doors, bathrooms, and on roofs. They are round in shape and equipped with spokes, somewhat similar to sun rays. Such windows are very popular and allow you to give your home an unusual look.
  2. Arched arched windows are a regular rectangle, the upper side of which is rounded. This option looks more beautiful than the previous one, but is very easy to use. Most often, such windows are installed in big houses, but they also look good in country cottages.

Arched windows are not just a hole in the wall that allows light to enter the room, but also a unique decorative element that gives the house an elegant and significant look.

Based on the material used, such window structures are divided into wooden and plastic. Arched PVC windows are:

  • lancet - found in Gothic cathedrals;
  • semi-circular, which decorate Orthodox churches;
  • Moorish, resembling a horseshoe.

Arched plastic windows There are blind and opening ones, they can have all kinds of radii and angles of inclination.

Color palette plastic frames extremely rich. They can imitate the color and structure of wood, have a classic white, beige or gray color, suitable for high-tech style, or be colored and used for non-standard room decoration.

If you want to have a large arched window in your home, then at the design stage be sure to calculate the wind, dynamic and static loads that will fall on it.

Arched wooden windows come in the following forms:

  • circular, having a full radius;
  • truncated;
  • having two radii;
  • lancet.

Just like plastic windows, wooden windows can be fixed or can be opened. At the request of the customer they are equipped with various decorative elements, for example, bindings and beams, and also embedding one arch into another.

Such windows are made from almost any wood, most often oak, pine or larch.

Making arched windows from wood is an extremely complex and time-consuming process. The opening mechanisms are as follows:

  • folding;
  • rotary;
  • tilt and turn.

In production wooden windows a mandatory operation is their treatment with antiseptic agents, as well as coloring compounds, specially designed for window structures. Such paints are environmentally friendly, elastic, have good adhesion to wooden surfaces, are not afraid of UV radiation and temperature changes.

Wooden structures are more expensive than arched plastic windows. Their prices are higher due to the environmental friendliness of the natural material.

Advantages and disadvantages of arched windows

The advantages of such window designs include the following properties:

  • the opportunity to create a unique and non-standard look of the house, give it the effect of antiquity or simply decorate it, add elegance to the interior;
  • allow you to do small room visually wider and longer;
  • have high strength and for a long time services;

  • high-quality fittings make it possible to create various elements decorations;
  • in terms of heat and sound insulation qualities they are in no way inferior to standard window structures;
  • environmentally friendly if made from wood;
  • Allows you to use any opening mechanism.

The disadvantage is the following feature:

  • because Even for specialists it is very time-consuming and difficult to produce arched windows; their price is several times higher than the cost of ordinary, standard windows.

DIY arched window

Arched metal-plastic windows done only in production, so let's look at the process self-made using wooden ones as an example.

There are several ways to make wooden window structures. The choice depends on the set of available tools and skills.

Method number 1:

1. On initial stage make a plywood template with a thickness of 3 to 5 mm. It will simplify the actions when working with a manual router.

2. Arches are made either from ready-made laminated timber or from individual parts, stacked together and glued using the brick laying method. The thickness of these blanks or lamellas should be 2.7-2.8 cm. They are glued together with both planes and ends, which have a certain cut angle and fit each other perfectly. The structure is assembled as follows:

  • Place the blanks of the initial row with their glue-treated ends facing each other;
  • Place the next row on top with glue-coated surfaces;
  • Lay another row in the same way.

3. This three-layer structure must be pressed down with a weight or compressed with a vice before the glue sets. An important parameter is the mismatch of joints in adjacent rows.

4. Next comes the processing of the glued structure according to the template, and the outer end should be adjusted to it only approximately, because it will rest against the wall of the window opening, but inner side must be verified with extreme precision. For these manipulations you will need a router.

Method number 2:

The illustration shows a three-layer profile beam. The first picture shows the end part of the profile that will be used to produce a blind arched transom. The second picture shows the end of the profile from which the opening transom will be made. The red line indicates where the layers of timber are glued together.

1. Glue all the lamellas of the future arched structure layer by layer. It is best to make a template for each of the layers, because... their width is different. When gluing lamellas with their ends together, use either the “insert tenon” or “micro tenon” method.

2. Process each of the blanks based on the template, observing the rows.

3. Now take the router and make a fold where necessary.

4. Fasten all the blanks into a single arched beam using glue and a vice.

5. Proceeding in the same way, make an opening sash into an arched transom.

6. Connect the ends of the arched component of the window to the remaining parts of the structure vertically and horizontally using spikes or a mustache.

How to make a round arched window

A round window is made in exactly the same way as described above, only there they used blanks in the shape of an arch, and here they will be in the shape of a semicircle.

The blanks also consist of lamellas glued together at their ends. The finished workpiece, after processing according to the template, should take the shape of a semicircle. Each layer should consist of two semicircular blanks, which, when combined, form a circle.

All layers are assembled dry and stacked on top of each other, and the sequence must be observed.

Move the joints of the lamellas relative to the adjacent layer, as described above, according to the principle brickwork. Once the semicircles fit perfectly together, start gluing them together.

Arched windows perfectly diversify the design of any home, and they stand out and look great both outside the house and inside the room. Most often, such glazing is found in private cottage construction or in brick Stalinist houses. They differ high durability and frost resistance are exactly the same as ordinary rectangular ones.

However, there are some peculiarities in their production. In order to make the product, you need to bend a plastic profile under the right angle, which requires the manufacturer’s company to have additional equipment and capacity, and this also requires additional time.

Manufacturing process.

To bend a plastic profile, it is heated to a temperature of approximately 130 degrees, and with the help of special machines and tools it is given a given radius and shape. The PVC profile is heated in a special chamber with ceramic elements. It is worth noting that the heating temperature is not too high, so there is no harm or deformation as long as technological standards, does not occur. Arched plastic windows must have the same perfect view, like ordinary rectangular ones.

They can be made from either white or colored profiles. The film that covers the colored plastic profile is heat-resistant. This happens because the film itself is applied using heat. Therefore, during the manufacturing process of the arch, the profile does not suffer in any way.

Semicircular products have their own characteristics. On any structure, a special steel is installed inside . And on parts of the window where there are curved areas reinforced profile is not installed, since it is impossible to bend it without damage. If it is damaged, its presence does not affect thermal conductivity in any way. Therefore, as a rule, there will be a colder area at the top of the arch than at the bottom, and In summer, the window can widen greatly. What to do to avoid this?

Video:

It is worth noting that not all companies manufacture arched structures themselves. The fact is that their production requires expensive equipment, and there are not many orders for arched windows, so small manufacturers order them from more large industries. For the customer, this means that the production time for such windows may increase even more.

The production time for semicircular products depends on the complexity of the radius of the arched product, but as a rule, it is at least 2 weeks. If the design is colored, the process will take at least 3 weeks.

Freeze.

Measuring yourself is quite a bold step, especially for such a complex product as an arched one. You need to determine the type of house in which you will measure the opening, determine whether there is a quarter or not, and what its size is. Rectangular parts of an opening are measured in the same way as rectangular ones. The part that is semicircular is measured in several places, at least three.

If you still want to measure it yourself, determine the type of arch on your window. If you have a semicircular one, where the radius is the same on all sides, you need to measure it in three places, on the left, on the right and the vertical radius. If there is a quarter on your opening, then add 1-3 cm in height to the radius; if there is no quarter and your opening is even, then on the contrary, subtract 2-3 cm.

If your arched window is lancet, with different radii, has some complex shape, or has protruding parts, you you will need an arch template. That is, you need to take a sheet of cardboard or thin plywood and cut out the exact appropriate shape of the structure from it. If the house is old, even a semicircular arch may have an unequal radius, so a template will not be superfluous in any case; even experienced measurers often use this method.

Keep in mind: the template must exactly match your plastic structure; in the factory workshop they will make exactly this size and the same shape.

If it is possible to invite a qualified measurer, do not neglect this opportunity in such an opening great opportunity make a mistake. The product will be 1-2 cm larger than the opening, or much smaller, or simply will not fit into the existing opening; these are already fatal mistakes. Products are not cheap, and arched ones are more expensive than rectangular ones; do not rely on yourself where you are not confident in your abilities. The only case where this process can be done accurately is in a wooden house. If the structure turns out to be larger than the opening, you can simply expand the opening using a tool. With concrete and brick houses This technique is quite expensive and time-consuming, and the consequences can be quite sad.

Limit dimensions (width, radius, angle).

The minimum width is 70 cm (700 mm). The product cannot be made smaller; the profile cannot be bent at such an angle.

Arch radius y different manufacturers and profile systems vary, but is at least 35 cm (350 mm) for blind ones, and at least 40 cm (400 mm) for opening ones.

The tilt angle should be no more than 45 degrees. If your opening in height more closely resembles an elongated ellipse, then most likely they will not be able to produce a high-quality arch for you; there may be some defects in its appearance.

Layout in arches.

Currently, the production capacity of double-glazed window manufacturers and modern technology make it possible to produce structures with layouts of various thicknesses and colors. What is a layout, what sizes and colors does it come in, see this article.

But the layout can be present not only in rectangular plastic structures, but also in arched ones. And even more modern technologies allow bend it under different angles , do it semicircular, and even complex shapes . In addition, it can be connected at different angles with virtually no restrictions.

If you want to make a product with a complex design, but you don’t need to divide it using a plastic profile, the layout will help you make it simple unique design, keep in mind that ninety percent plastic structures These are white windows without any details. In addition, it turns out to be much cheaper - the cost of folding profiles compared to plastic profile, quite small. You can plan complex patterns and even simple designs on glass.

The production time for such double-glazed windows is two to three working days longer than conventional transparent ones. In case you order very complex design window, the period may increase to two weeks.

Installation.

The most important difference is the installation of slopes. The most popular type of slopes for these products is plasterboard, followed by plaster and plastic. If you plan to install plastic slopes, then this is a rather labor-intensive and energy-consuming process. Just as an arch has its own curvature, so the slope will have the same exact bend. Therefore for this plastic panel or foamed PVC will have to be bent at a certain angle, which requires very skilled installers and additional time. Accordingly, this increases the cost of installing the slope, but an undoubted advantage is that they still take less time than other types of finishing.

Special attention should be paid to such a seemingly insignificant detail as window corner. Even at the ordering stage, check with the manufacturer exactly how the corner will be finished and what the window will look like in its final state. Usually, for this purpose, the corner is also bent with a construction industrial hairdryer, but some try to make it from several parts, which does not look at all aesthetically pleasing.

When choosing designs, clients are interested in the question of what determines the price of arched PVC windows. The cost of products is influenced by a number of factors: type of double-glazed window, dimensions (width and height), profiles used, fittings, features of dismantling the old version, installation of a new solution Not standard form. The production of an exquisite interior element in the form of an arch is a complex process, which can only be handled by professionals with experience and perfect command of the technology.

In addition to the actual shape, an arched window differs significantly from regular window functions. Due to its special geometry, it is easy to manufacture tilt and turn window in the shape of an arch it is impossible. An opening arched window is a difficult product to manufacture and, more importantly, to operate. To avoid unnecessary expenses and hassle when managing such a window, they resort to separate execution. The upper - arched part - is made non-opening, and the lower - rectangular - tilt-and-turn.

To make a window along an arched opening, a measurement technician needs to visit to measure the opening and make patterns (read how and why this is done below).

How are arched PVC windows made?

The production time of an arched plastic window is a little more manufacturing standard shaped windows: more here manual labor. Production time depends on the professionalism of the craftsmen.

The production of arched windows from PVC profiles consists of two stages:

  • bending of arches and arched elements from PVC profiles;
  • welding of the arched part with straight fragments and finishing glazing.

    • Installation of an arched window

      When installing an arched window, you should adhere to GOST recommendations for window installation (see: installation of plastic windows according to GOST). Installing an arched window in wooden house should be preceded by more serious preparation of the opening (see: installation of plastic windows in a wooden house).

      Finishing arched slopes

      In addition to installing an arched window, important stage- finishing of the slopes of the opening.

      Some types of arched structures, such as lancet windows, offer limited choice finishing materials. Due to high labor costs, the cost of finishing slopes arched shape higher than in the case of standard window PVC.

      The most versatile is finishing with plasterboard and plaster mortar. When choosing these materials, the accuracy of the geometry and the overall quality of the work depend on the craftsman.

      IN Business-M company standard arched block is mounted with plastic slopes made of plastic sandwich panels. To order, work can be made from plasterboard and plaster materials.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

        What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
