How to choose a curtain rod: photos inspire

There is a saying among designers and not only that windows are the eyes of a room, which means that they should be framed in a worthy manner. But before choosing curtain rods, photos of which you can find in the catalogs of manufacturers, it is important to decide in what style the window opening will be decorated. Cornices can be one-, two-, or three-row, and are made of materials such as:

  • tree;
  • metal;
  • plastic.

Wooden construction is already a classic of the genre, fitting perfectly into any interior. To make such a product, wood with a dense texture and clearly defined fibers is taken. Usually preference is given to:

  • nut;
  • oak;
  • cherry;
  • and some coniferous species.

Wooden cornices are rarely three-row and do not include a tulle-curtain-lambrequin combination.

Plastic is more economical and universal material, perfectly adapting to any style and available in a wide range of shades and configurations. The disadvantage of such products is that low-quality plastic can fade or crack over time.

Metal cornices are distinguished not only by their durability, but also by their solid appearance. They go well with various fabrics and can be worn on their own. interesting accessory, and forging elements give such products a special chic. Cornices are available in glossy or matte, and are also made of copper, brass or other materials. Black, white, gold or “silver-plated” products are very popular.

Which cornice is better: the perfect choice

In the question of which cornice is better, you should start not only from the material, but also from the design. According to the configuration they are distinguished:

  • rod;
  • strings;
  • rail;
  • profile;
  • baguette

The main thing is that the product matches the mood and style of the interior. When choosing a cornice, it is important to consider a number of factors:

  • distance between walls;
  • window width;
  • the height of the wall section between the ceiling and the window opening.

The question of how to choose the length of the cornice often confuses buyers. Usually this parameter is determined as follows: window width plus 40-50 cm. Such calculations are valid for small and medium-sized rooms. When decorating windows in large and elongated rooms, the rods are stretched along the entire wall with indentations along the edges of 3-4 inches. Long length requires a larger cross-section of eaves pipes and strips, and in order to avoid sagging of the structure, one additional bracket is added for every one and a half meters of length.

According to placement on the wall, the cornices are arranged in the following ways:

  • from corner to corner;
  • just above the window;
  • partially above the window.

One method or another can significantly adjust the spatial geometry of the room. The appearance of the entire room depends on the choice of cornice.

How to choose ceiling cornices

Based on the method of fastening, cornices are divided into wall and ceiling; the latter are more advantageous because they go well with many styles and allow you to visually make the ceilings higher. So, how to choose ceiling cornices correctly, what parameters to pay attention to?

  1. The cornice can be made of plastic or lightweight aluminum, which is more durable and has good performance characteristics.
  2. Decorative consoles on the products serve as an additional decorative element and give the window a more elegant look.
  3. Number of rows of canvases.
  4. Type of clips and hooks: plastic ones are quieter when moving, while metal ones are more effective.
Curtain rods with the type of ceiling mounting have another significant advantage - good thermal insulation properties, ensured by a tighter fit of the curtains to the wall, which creates a kind of barrier to cold air from the window.

It is also important financial side question, but today cornices are presented in such a variety that choosing the optimal model in all respects is not difficult.

What material are the curtain rods in your house made of? Tell us about it in

Each style in interior design has its own window design features with certain models of curtains and curtains. And, naturally, a very definite decision is required in terms of choosing a cornice. At the same time, there are both universal possibilities and highly specific ones. But it’s better to sort everything out point by point.

Cornices differ in the method of fastening: they are ceiling and wall. For their production, various materials are used for their production: wood, metal and plastic. Cornices can be designed for one or several rows of curtains.

Ceiling and wall cornices

By choosing the method of attaching the cornice, you can visually adjust some of the features of the room.

Ceiling mounting of cornice suitable for low ceilings(up to 2.6 m). A curtain hanging from the very ceiling, and even with a vertical pattern, will give the desired effect visual increase room height.

Restrictions for attaching the ceiling cornice will arise in cases where the ceiling is covered with plasterboard. And this is especially true if light bulbs are installed in it in the immediate vicinity of the intended location of the cornice. Moreover, the option of such fastening is unacceptable for suspended ceilings if holes for fastenings are not provided. However, there is a way out: you can foresee all the nuances in advance and do it in suspended ceiling a special niche for curtains.

However, not every curtain can be hung on ceiling cornice. For example, this option is not suitable for curtains with eyelets (decorative rings inserted into holes along the upper edge of the curtain fabric).

Wall mounting is provided for round tube cornices.

Regardless of the location of the cornice fastening, you need to take into account the location of the window sill and the heating radiator. Moreover, the measurement should be carried out not from the plane of the window, but from the plane of the wall. There should be enough distance so that all rows of curtains do not refract against the edges of the window sill or radiator.

Metal curtain rods

The modern market is ready to provide the widest range cornices from various materials. But not a single texture compares in its consumer characteristics with metal. Until now, metal curtain rods are considered the most durable and reliable, especially if you need to hang heavy curtains. Manufacturers are ready to offer models suitable for almost any style in the interior: high-tech with the cold shine of polished metal, art deco with rich decoration and exquisite forms, strict classics, ease of Provence or good old retro. It's practically ideal option for placing curtains in the kitchen, bedroom, living room and other parts of the apartment.

Typically, metal curtain rods are a round rod that is attached to the wall. Although you can try and find special fastenings to the ceiling. The bar itself can be shiny, matte or coated with paint of any shade. The main decoration of such a cornice are the finials. It is thanks to them that you can most successfully fit the cornice into overall design rooms. The tips are often made in a fancy shape and coated with a coating of precious metals- for example, gold or silver. Sometimes they are decorated with stones of varying degrees of value or rhinestones. Of course, all this affects the price, but metal curtain rods initially do not fall into the category of the cheapest options.

They deserve a special word forged cornices. They are usually made to order. This item is exclusive. In addition, made according to an original sketch, it will become a real highlight in the design of the window.

What are the benefits of wooden curtain rods for curtains?

An environmentally friendly material that is excellent in processing, taking the required form, and can withstand a significant load - this is a tree. Wooden curtain rods can not only carry a functional load, but also serve as an excellent decoration. Beautiful brackets, rods, rings with fastenings for curtains and original ends allow you to create a truly wonderful ensemble together with curtains and decorate the window opening in the best possible way.

Wooden cornices can be attached in two positions - to the wall and the ceiling. You can hang quite heavy curtains on them without fear of deformation of the cornice.

The most relevant application would be wooden cornices in a room designed in classic or rustic style, for example, Provence or country.

Flexible curtain rods

The design and architecture of premises is becoming more and more intricate. For example, smooth curves of the wall, bay windows complex shape pose a difficult task in designing window openings. Or, according to the designer’s idea, it is necessary to separate part of the room using curtains hanging in a semicircle. And here you can’t do without a flexible cornice.

It can be attached to both walls and ceilings using special devices in increments of 40 cm. Its rigidity is capable of sufficient high loads, and flexibility allows you to give it the most different shapes. Original solution to implement the most incredible ideas.

Plastic curtain rods

Plastic cornice is one of the most practical, lightweight and moisture-resistant options. Polyvinyl chloride, used for the manufacture of such cornices, helps solve issues with the design of unusual window openings (bay windows, arches). The design of the plastic cornice can be attached to both walls and ceilings. For various types and curtain weights are applied different cornices, withstanding less or more severe loads.

A plastic curtain rod is very convenient if you need to hide curtain fastenings as much as possible. Its aesthetic is low visibility. Moreover, such a cornice is very convenient when decorating large window openings (up to 6 meters). Good combination low price and functional characteristics.

Baguette cornices

A baguette is a decorative strip that covers the fastening of the curtain to the cornice. Baguette cornices are used for curtains and lambrequins, which are arranged in several rows. They are especially good in large spacious rooms. This design of the cornice can often be found in the halls of theaters or restaurants. Suitable not only for window openings. With their help you can decorate a niche or doorway.

The cornice can be mounted either on the ceiling or on the wall. In this case, the fastener itself is hidden behind a beautifully designed baguette. The baguette cornice is an integral feature classic style.

String cornices

This type of cornice consists of several brackets with a string or strings stretched tightly between them. If the length of the cornice exceeds 3 meters, then another bracket is added in the middle to avoid sagging of the string. For this type of curtain rods, heavy curtains made of brocade, jacquard, etc. cannot be used. Curtains made of light taffeta, organza, silk or chiffon are best suited. The mount can be fixed both on the wall and on the ceiling.

To make the cornice look most attractive, designers offer a number of options for improving its appearance. This includes the coating of the strings themselves, which can be not just the color of steel, but also coated with copper or brass, which from a distance resembles gold plating. Often string curtain rods are complemented with original clips that hold the curtains. Another important design “trick” is all kinds of tips. The latter may not be easy various shapes and colors, but also made of other materials - for example, wood, plastic or glass.

However, string cornices are more limited in their use. Partly due to its shape, partly due to its inability to withstand the weight of blackout curtains. Therefore, they will not be appropriate in classic interior, but very relevant for a room in the style of minimalism, hi-tech, avant-garde. As an added bonus string cornices we can call them relative affordability.

And a few more general advice. In order not to reduce the height of the room, try to ensure that the width of the curtain does not exceed its height. Additional curtain rod brackets are necessary for heavy curtains. However, it is worth considering the fact that they may interfere with the movement of the curtain fabric along the cornice.

Curtains are a necessary interior accessory. They add beauty and comfort to rooms. The style and volume of the room appears. It's hard to imagine an apartment without curtains on the windows.

To ensure that they fit perfectly and are securely fastened, you need to choose the right cornice. Be able to calculate the size. Decide on a color.

If the wall is concrete, it is advisable to install a profile wall cornice using dowels. To do this, holes are drilled in the profile. First, using a drill with a wider diameter, holes are made along the face of the product, leaving equal intervals between them. A drill with a smaller diameter is used to drill a hole in the part of the product adjacent to the wall. The diameter of the drilled hole should be equal to the width of the screw head. The heavier the curtain fabric, the smaller the distance left between the holes!

Then the console is placed against the wall and, through the drilled holes, the places of future fastenings are marked with a marker. At the designated points, using a drill or hammer drill, drill holes with a depth equal to the size of the dowel, and then remove dust from there. After this, all that remains is to hang the product on the wall and test the strength of the structure.

They are attached in the same way metal brackets for curtain rods. A similar algorithm is used when installing cornices with ready-made holes. Accessories for profile metal curtain rods are included with the product.

In the case of wooden wall the steps are repeated, but instead of dowels, self-tapping screws are used for fastening.

While working, it is important to use a level and ensure that the wooden or metal curtain rods are perfectly aligned with the ceiling and floor.
