In the current era, people are highly dependent on technical inventions, including those of a household nature. It is unlikely that today you can find the average family without such a necessary unit as a refrigerator. Sometimes, when it breaks, we begin to wonder: “How did our grandmothers manage without this miracle device?”

However, a refrigerator is not always purchased only because it is broken. Where more often to the store for new technology sent only because appearance old leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, not everyone knows that the procedure for painting a refrigerator easily resolves such difficulties.

Even old refrigerator can gain new life thanks to painting

This method, as well as pasting the surface with oracal (self-adhesive decorative film) is perfect for updating the design of a refrigerator or hiding external defects. But, unlike the second method, which requires considerable skill and patience, otherwise the film will lie on the surface with air bubbles and wrinkles, you can paint the refrigerator quickly and without extra costs for materials and tools.

Of course, like any restoration work, the process of painting refrigeration equipment has its own characteristics and some nuances. Moreover, they need to be taken into account if the operation is carried out by hand.

Choosing paint and tools

So, to paint a refrigerator at home, you need to purchase paint and tools in advance.

First, you should choose a paint: since a refrigerator is not the most common surface to process, not every coloring agent is suitable as a coloring agent. So what should you paint with?

It is worth noting that the applied finishing paint layer should, firstly, protect the casing from mechanical damage and, secondly, decorate the device. In the case of a refrigerator that will always be in a dry and well-heated room, it is not in danger of rust, so there is no point in spending money on an expensive anti-corrosion agent. will also be superfluous, because the operation of the refrigerator itself near fire is prohibited.

Waterproof metal paint will cope well with tasks such as painting a refrigerator

On the other hand, the coloring material must be tintable and thixotropic (hold the layer on vertical surface), be elastic (after all, the metal used in refrigerators has a high coefficient of thermal expansion) and not be afraid of detergents. As a result, we get the conclusion: it is needed for interior work.

The metal surface is covered with paints of various compositions:

  • organosilicon;
  • zinc
  • alkyd
  • nitrocellulose
  • acrylic
  • epoxy
  • polyurethane
  • oil

However, to simply paint a refrigerator, you don’t need to go into much detail about their contents. For this type of purpose, the following types of coloring solution are suitable:

  1. Automotive nitro enamel. Durable, durable and beautiful. Sold in cans and applied by spraying. It has several disadvantages: cost, toxicity, uncontrollable splashes during the process, as well as the need for subsequent cleaning of accidentally painted areas with a solvent.
  2. Acrylic paint metal surfaces. Allows you to choose from a wide variety color solutions, safe due to the lack toxic substances. Apply with a roller or brush.
  3. Polyurethane or epoxy paint. The most resistant to wear, difficult to prepare due to two components.

Epoxy paint can be used to paint both the external and internal parts of the refrigerator.

For the most part, any of these three will do. finishing materials. You can paint the inside of the refrigerator with the same paint.

Any narrow paint roller made of threads or a brush will be suitable as a working device, and if used, tools will not be needed at all.

Surface preparation

For the vast majority of people, the kitchen is perhaps the most favorite room in the apartment. It is associated with home warmth and delicious food. But this coin also has a flip side, and it concerns household appliances.

During the cooking process, soot settles on the surface of kitchen electronics, which, when dried, forms a greasy layer of stains. Over time, stains attract dust, so the refrigerator becomes covered with a layer of dirt that is resistant to regular detergents. Therefore, before painting, the surface of the refrigerator must be thoroughly washed so that the paint applies easily and evenly.

For pre-treatment as well as further painting works you need to buy or take out of the pantry in advance:

  • detergent for removing greasy and stubborn stains;
  • sponge with abrasive coating;
  • wet and dry rags;
  • fine-grained sandpaper;
  • degreaser (acetone, gasoline, kerosene);
  • primer (optional);
  • scotch, cling film or masking tape;
  • unnecessary sheets of newspapers and magazines as lining;
  • respirator;
  • gloves.

When painting, to protect your respiratory organs, you must purchase a respirator.

Now that all the accompanying materials are at hand, you can begin.

Preliminary preparation of the surface of a refrigeration unit for painting includes the following steps:

  1. Disconnect equipment from the power supply and remove internal shelves and trays.
  2. Thoroughly rinse the device with outside using a special detergent and sponges with abrasive coating.
  3. Using sandpaper as a sanding material to remove old coating. This manipulation will allow you to sand out cracks and chips, and will also provide the paint with good adhesion to the surface.
  4. Wiping first with a wet, then dry cloth to remove sanded particles and dirt.
  5. Degreasing the surface with a special solution.
  6. Apply primer recommended by the paint manufacturer (optional).
  7. Sealing fittings (handles, decorative strips, technological holes, rubber seals) with masking tape or film. Using masking tape you can create some kind of ornament or design. In this case, during the procedure you need to monitor the tightness of the adhesive tape to the refrigerator.
  8. Protect floors and nearby furnishings with newspaper or magazines.
  9. A preliminary test of the paint on an inconspicuous area will allow you to once again verify the correct selection of the desired color and the reaction of the paint (does it lie smoothly, does it have wrinkles or smudges).

It’s also worth noting that the best way to paint a refrigerator or any other interior item with your own hands is outside on a fine day. Strong wind will create artificial “smudges” on the surface, therefore, if it is windy outside, painting activities should be moved to a well-ventilated area.

If you know how to draw well, you can create a real work of art on your refrigerator.

The refrigerator has gone through all stages of pre-treatment. Now it is time to begin the surface painting operation. Here the recommendations will depend on the type of paint chosen and the tools used.

Important: putting on a respirator and rubber gloves is prerequisite procedures.

Spray painting

If work is carried out using aerosols in cans, paint should be done at a distance of 30 cm from the surface of the unit using uniform movements from left to right, without staying long in the same place to avoid smudges or too thick a layer. In a situation where an incident does occur, you can use a solvent, for example, one of the most familiar ones - acetone.

Painting occurs in 2-3 layers, between which a break of half an hour should be taken to allow each previous layer of dye to dry properly.

Painting with roller or brush

Apply a little paint to a roller or brush. Then comes coloring in a vertical direction or movements from left to right. After half an hour, a second layer is applied. Hard to reach places can be painted over using a brush large size. If necessary, the third layer will hide all the flaws of the previous two.

To consolidate the result, give a glossy shine or matte effect and protect the fresh paint, you can cover the surface of the refrigerator with a layer of acrylic varnish in aerosol form.

Painting a refrigerator at home is an excellent opportunity to give an old electrical appliance a new life and update the interior in an original way. For these purposes it is worth spending several hours of your time, especially since such decorative solution It will delight the eyes of household members and guests for a long time!

In my son’s apartment, the kitchen is so small that the refrigerator doesn’t fit in it. I had to put it in the room, and it was literally like an eyesore - it looked very alien. I offered him several ways to paint the refrigerator with my own hands or modify it using other methods.

In the meantime, he’s thinking, I want to tell about them to those who have a similar problem or just want to update old, but still working equipment.

All painting methods

If you need to get a solid, monochromatic surface, then painting the refrigerator yourself is essentially a piece of cake. We pick up a brush, roller or spray can and paint everything. Preparation may take much longer.

It includes the following steps:

  1. Grinding. Only necessary for an old refrigerator that has chips, scratches and traces of rust on the surface. If they are not there, we skip this step. If you have it, take a sandpaper or a drill with sanding attachment and clean the damaged coating.

  1. Putty. Deep chips and dents must be filled with putty, otherwise they will be noticeable under the paint and under any other coating.
  2. Degreasing. This is done using solvents or regular detergents.
  3. Hardware protection. Everything that is filmed is filmed. We seal the remaining parts that should not get paint on with masking tape.

This the instructions will be relevant for all other methods decorative design refrigerators and other equipment, which I will also talk about. You can watch the video at the end of the article in more detail and more clearly.

But for now let’s talk about how to paint a refrigerator.

Regular painting

It will lie best on the surface and metal paint will stick to it well. It happens in banks and aerosol cans. Choose the one that is more convenient.

  • Painting with a brush or roller takes longer and is more difficult- it is difficult to achieve perfect uniformity of application. But you can do this right on the spot.

  • Aerosol paint is applied quickly and evenly. But it needs more to work free space. There is a risk of staining the floor and walls, so everything around needs to be covered with film. In addition, sprayed paint can enter the respiratory system. Therefore, it is better to work not at home at all, but in the open air.

Instead of regular paint, you can take slate paint, it also comes in different colors. With its help, you can not only update your old refrigerator, but also turn its walls into convenient writing boards. These could be recipes, grocery lists, or just messages left for your family.

Painting with a simple pattern

If you don’t like a monotonous surface, you can apply multi-colored stripes to the refrigerator or decorate it with geometric shapes or ornaments. And so that transitions between different colors turned out clear, you need to use masking tape.

It is temporarily glued along pre-marked boundaries, and then carefully removed.

When one color is completely dry, use tape to limit areas of the other color. And so on depending on the number of shades chosen.

Painting in a car service

If you don’t want to repaint the refrigerator at home, you can take it to a body painting shop. This is exactly what my friends did not so long ago.

Advantages of this method:

  • No dirt or smell in the apartment;
  • Color fastness, since after applying the coating it is dried in special chambers;
  • Possibility of applying any design to the surface with an airbrush. Of course, if this service is provided in a workshop.

IN major cities there are specialized companies that deal specifically with airbrushing not only on cars, but also on furniture, household appliances and any other things.

And now about other ways of decorating:

Method 1 - painting

Don’t think that painting a refrigerator is only available to those who are very good at drawing. Of course, it will be much easier for such people to decorate it by showing their imagination and coming up with a design that will best match the interior in design and color.

For people without artistic abilities We have come up with other ways to update your refrigerator with your own hands. They are based on the use of stencils. You can take:

  1. Ready stencil. It is fixed to the surface with tape, and the space inside the slots is filled with paint.

  1. Homemade stencil. You can find a suitable design or ornament, print it on a printer and cut it out. And then use it for its intended purpose. If this is a single drawing, use it as a basis plain paper. If it is repetitive, then it is better to transfer the pattern to transparent plastic. For example, on a plastic office folder.

  1. Anti-stencil. The pattern is obtained in the opposite way: paint is sprayed over the stencil. And when it is removed, an unpainted drawing remains in its place.

Tree leaves, lace napkins, flowers cut out of paper, etc. can be used as an anti-stencil.

Method 2 - decoupage

Don't feel like painting? Don't know how to draw? I suggest another original way decor: do-it-yourself refrigerator decoupage. There is hardly any need to explain what it is, but what if someone doesn’t know?

In fact, this is an ordinary paper applique, which is varnished for beauty and reliability. It prevents the picture from getting dirty and peeling off when washing the surface.

The surface can be given a relief, cracks can be created on it to imitate antiquity, and it can be covered with gold. But this is hardly appropriate in our case, because the equipment needs to be washed. Therefore, I do not advise you not to split hairs.

Pictures for the refrigerator can be printed on a color printer, cut out from magazines, or drawn by yourself. But more often, decoupage cards or colored multi-layer napkins sold in art stores are used for this purpose. Because the thinner the paper, the more natural the decor looks.

This method can be combined with painting and painting elements. Here, for example, is how to decoupage a refrigerator with napkins:

Image Description
Step 1

Cut out the design from the napkin with sharp scissors.

Step 2

Carefully separate the top layer.

Step 3

We leave several pictures intact, and cut the rest, removing several berries at a time and changing the size and shape of the bunch. We will also need several separate leaves.

Step 4

We glue the pictures onto the refrigerator with PVA glue. Apply it with a soft brush directly on top of the picture, smoothing it from the center to the edges.

Step 5

Using a soft pencil we draw twigs and antennae

Step 6

Take acrylic paints and paint over the branches brown. We outline the antennae in green.

Step 7

Apply highlights to the berries using white paint. And wait for the paint to dry.

Step 8

We cover the entire refrigerator with acrylic varnish in two layers and admire the result.

This technique is good because it allows you to mask individual dents and scratches without repainting the entire unit. But if desired, and if the composition requires it, you can first apply a layer of paint.

Method 3 - pasting with film

Another way to decorate a refrigerator without using paint is to cover it with vinyl film. It is self-adhesive, so no other consumables won't be needed.

The method of pasting depends on the purpose of the alteration. Namely: do you want to completely change the image of a “cold friend” or just embellish it.

Full wrapping

In modern built-in kitchens, the refrigerator often stands out from the orderly row of furniture, sharply differing from it in a different color. Or, as in our case, placed next to the furniture in the living room, it looks alien.

In such cases, film on the refrigerator will help out. It is sold in rolls and pleases with an abundance of colors and patterns.

The assortment includes plain and multi-colored films, as well as with the most different drawings, including those imitating natural materials.

It is not so easy to stick such a coating evenly, without wrinkles, folds and bubbles. Manufacturers recommend doing this by gradually removing the backing from the adhesive layer and smoothing the already glued part with a rubber spatula.

I like the other way better:

  1. I completely remove the backing from the cut piece, placing it pattern side down on the table.
  2. Then I spray water from a spray bottle on both the film and the surface to be pasted.
  3. As a result, the refrigerator film glides easily over the surface while gluing. It can be moved to achieve a given position and easily squeeze out air bubbles.
  4. After some time, the water will evaporate and the coating will stick to the walls.

Partial pasting

We remember decoupage and act in a similar way, cutting out individual fragments from the film. The only difference is that we don’t need any glue or varnish. Because the film already has an adhesive layer, and it itself is not afraid of moisture.

It’s even easier to use stickers. They are sold in many supermarkets and home improvement stores. The price is low, there is an assortment for every taste, and all the design work will take literally a few minutes.

And finally, another option: colored tape. Stick it with parallel stripes, intersecting lines or any pattern, and the refrigerator will be unrecognizable.

Conclusion

The video in this article shows detailed master class on updating the refrigerator with self-adhesive. Pay attention to careful surface preparation. It is always necessary, no matter what you choose to decorate your equipment: painting, painting or decoupage.

These methods themselves, as you can see, are quite simple to implement and can be implemented at home. I look forward to your comments and will be happy to answer your questions!

Of course, not everyone will like these ideas for decorating a refrigerator. Of course, when it stands in the kitchen like a super-modern giant, a snow-white iceberg or a glossy colored toy, it’s great. But not everyone has such refrigerators, take mine for example. Although it is Bosch, it was bought in 90 or 91. He is no longer so beautiful and fresh, although he is always clean. Or the huge freezer that I have to keep in my room. He doesn't fit in at all general interior, and I would love to decorate it. In general, whoever is with me should come here. Let's watch and read.

Modern production Today, the production of these essential household appliances uses new technologies, so the assortment of stores now includes not only their snow-white models or versions in metallic color, but also products in cases of all colors of the rainbow. Some enterprises have even started producing designer models. It seems that everything is fine and the consumer should be satisfied. Ah, no! The lion's share of buyers now prefers to purchase standard, familiar white refrigerators. The problem is that the prices for multi-colored masterpieces of industry are too steep.

However, our people showed their wits here too and began to decorate refrigerator cases with their own hands, since the need for invention is cunning, and there are more than enough possibilities.

REFRIGERATOR DECOR: IDEAS AND MATERIALS

The surface of the refrigerator should become a canvas for the embodiment of your ideas. You can paint its walls with landscapes and drawings, try the decoupage technique on it, or simply, without straining, using spray paint, repaint it in a color that is dear to your heart and suitable for the interior.

DECORATIVE MAGNETS

The easiest way to transform a refrigerator, the technology of which even a child can handle, is to decorate the refrigerator with decorative magnets. Those who are completely lazy can buy the types they like in stores, but creative people are quite capable of creating them themselves. As for the number of magnets, it remains arbitrary. In this regard, rely solely on your taste. For some, a couple of products may well be enough, while for others, to be completely satisfied, they will need to hide the entire surface of the case under them.

MAGNETIC BOARDS

A magnetic board is also good for decorating a refrigerator. IN in this case this subject, in addition to decorative role, will be given the mission of uplifting the mood. The board will serve as an excellent place for family correspondence, and since all members of the household, without exception, come to the refrigerator, your messages will never go unread. Write reminders on magnetic boards, draw funny pictures, confess your love - in general, charge yourself with positivity and give it to others! Fill your home with happiness, because with the help of a magnetic board and a refrigerator it becomes even easier.

GADGETS IN DECOR

Today you can also see small digital frames on magnets. They allow uploading up to several dozen photos. Attach such a frame to the wall of the refrigerator and admire the lovely views.

STICKERS

The undisputed leader from the proposed decorative materials, steel stickers. Today they are sold in the most incredible options and colors. Consumers love them for their perfectly proportioned combination decorative beauty and ease of application to the surface.

In conjunction with affordable price, this turns the stickers into original and affordable way decor for your refrigerator.

But in this barrel of “honey” characteristics there was a traditional fly in the ointment. The problem is that vinyl stickers can only be used on the smooth, flat surfaces of newer generation refrigerators. Old models, with convex doors and blown walls, are best decorated with decoupage or repainted.

How to stick film on a refrigerator

1. Wash the refrigerator, if there are chips or scratches, sand them down and putty them with metal putty.

2. If possible, remove the handles from the refrigerator door - this will make it possible not to make unnecessary cuts.

3. Take measurements of the door and other parts of the refrigerator that you plan to cover.

4. Cover the refrigerator, starting from the top.

5. Cut the film in parts and immediately stick it on the moistened clean water surface (this way the film will lie more evenly, it can be corrected).

6. Avoid the formation of film creases; remove the air from under it with a soft cloth.

7. Cut the film at the corners. If possible, tuck its ends under the seal.

DECOUPAGE

Often, the body of refrigerators that have been in service for a long time is damaged or simply looks stale or yellowed. The decoupage method will help you cope with these manifestations of time. Do you want to try yourself in a creative field? Then prepare:

PVA glue, m nail scissors,

h four-layer napkins, and krill varnish

What you need to do: take scissors and carefully cut out the design or pattern on the napkins you prepared. Now separate the white base, but do it as carefully as possible so as not to damage the extracted pattern. Apply glue to the colored part and attach the pattern to the surface of the body, while smoothing out all the folds and straightening out any irregularities. When everything is ready, cover the resulting surface with several layers of varnish. Instead of napkins, it is quite possible to use drawings made on thin paper.

Decoupage opens up unique possibilities for refrigerator decor. Being decorated using this technique, the refrigerator will easily fit into the interior of any style.

COLORING

Regular painting of the refrigerator body can be used simply to improve its worn-out appearance, or it can be done for decoration purposes. In the first case, the refrigerator is simply returned to its lost white color, and in the second, its color is adjusted to the general color scheme design of the kitchen space.

ART PAINTING

This method of decorating a refrigerator also has the right to exist, especially if you have a talent for drawing or copying. You can work with acrylic paint and brushes or stencils and spray paint. Whatever you use to apply your drawing, you will need to cover the creation with a layer of varnish, naturally, after allowing the painting to dry thoroughly first. Varnishing is a must. It will play a protective role in this matter and will not allow the pattern to disappear from the surface after the first wash.

SELF-ADHESIVE MATERIALS

Restoration begins with removing the magnets and unscrewing the handles. If there are scratches or chips, you need to carefully fill them. Then you need to wash the surface of the refrigerator and wipe it dry.

If a film picture is chosen as the design, then you can with a simple pencil Mark the boundaries on the wall of the refrigerator and carefully glue the applique, starting from the top. You should glue slowly, carefully leveling the film so that no bubbles or folds remain.

If the entire surface of the kitchen unit is covered with film, then you need to take measurements and transfer them to the film and cut them out. Apply gradually, pressing the film tightly to the surface.

To properly cover the end of the door, you need to make an incision in the curved areas of the refrigerator. Then carefully bend and straighten. A refrigerator decorated with film looks very harmonious if the color matches the kitchen.

Painting an old refrigerator

How to change the color of the refrigerator if it old model with rounded sides? Decorating with film will be difficult and inconvenient. In that case the best option There will be paint for decoration.

Before painting an old refrigerator, you need to wash it and remove the handles. If that doesn’t work, cover the handles with tape to prevent paint from getting on them. Lightly sand the entire surface. It is convenient to apply the paint to the surface with a roller, but you can also use a spray.

The refrigerator should be coated with a very thin and even layer of paint; only this technique can achieve the desired result.

After the first layer, the look will be unpresentable, but after several (usually 4-5 are required) the desired effect will be achieved. Before each stage of painting, the previous layer must have time to dry, so you need to understand that the entire procedure will take at least 10 hours.

Decor with colored tape

How to cover a refrigerator if you don’t have a lot of time or money? Eat easy way update using colored tape. You can not take bright color, but white or metallized.

You can design the drawing in the form of geometric shapes, or depict ethnic motifs or a pattern in the Aztec style. Or use pieces of tape to depict an entire landscape, make funny inscriptions, or simply cover the entire surface with one color.

If a refrigerator decorated with tape is boring and boring, you can easily change the decor. The tape is removed using soft fabric soaked in soapy water.

  2. Plywood.
  3. Paint to match the cabinets.
  4. Metal color paint.

First, you need to wash and dry the refrigerator thoroughly. Then cover it with textured wallpaper (they can be replaced with self-adhesive film). Decorate the unit door along the upper edge with plywood overlays. Color them to match kitchen furniture, and the handles are painted with metallic paint.

You can choose any color scheme of wallpaper (film) and paint, it all depends on your imagination and general style kitchen room. The refrigerator does not have to match the color of the rest of the furniture; it can be combined with it in a different shade and become an interesting accent.

Decoupage

How to update an old refrigerator in the kitchen with your own hands using the fashionable decoupage technique? This will require a little patience and imagination, but no one will have this.

The first thing you need to start with is to decide on an idea of how exactly to decorate the refrigerator.   • four-layer napkins (for decoupage);
  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic varnish and paints;
  • brushes for glue and paint;
  • scissors, sandpaper with fine abrasive;
  • paint for gilding and craquelure (optional);
  • foam roller.

Wash the surface with soapy water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Degrease with alcohol, especially those places where the application will be.

Cut the desired picture and separate the bottom layer from the napkin. Apply a thin layer of PVA to the surface of the refrigerator and attach a design. Wait half a minute and run a roller over the picture to remove any unevenness.

Drying usually takes about 4-5 hours. After this, the edges of the picture must be carefully sanded so that the boundaries are not obvious, and covered with acrylic varnish in 2 layers.

It is not difficult to restore a refrigerator using the decoupage technique. More often, this technique is used to decorate in the “Provence” or “ethno” style, but it should also be in harmony with the rest of the furniture in the kitchen.

Ideas for restoring a refrigerator (39 photos)

Is your old refrigerator still functional, but very worn out and rusty in places? Or maybe it seems to you that this large metal “box” does not fit into the interior? Or do you just want to add a little variety to your kitchen? In this material we will talk about 8 ways to decorate a refrigerator, from DIY painting to decoupage, and also present 80 photo ideas for original modifications.

Method 1. Painting with slate paint and painting with crayons (+ master class)

The slate-coated refrigerator door is perfect place for notes: shopping and to-do lists, recipes and reminders, messages to household members and cute notes. And, of course, it’s very convenient for children to draw on such a “board” while mom cooks. To turn your refrigerator doors into whiteboards, you can choose one of the following four methods:

Method 1. Painting with slate paint. This method is somewhat more complicated than the others and, moreover, it eliminates the possibility of returning the surface to original form. But you can paint not only the doors, but also the entire body of the equipment with slate paint, and the coating itself will be more durable.

Method 2. Finishing with chalk wallpaper. Chalk wallpaper is easier to work with, and most importantly, it can be peeled off without leaving marks on the surface of the equipment. However, the coating is not very durable and needs to be changed periodically. In addition, it is more difficult to use chalk wallpaper to decorate rounded doors, corners, and to go around handles, displays, and protruding parts when gluing. If you want to cover the entire body, the coating will have visible seams. For this reason, it is best to decorate only the door or part of the door with chalk wallpaper.

Method 3. Magnetic mount slate board. Such a board can be mounted and dismantled as easily as one large magnet, and you can not only draw on it, but also attach small magnets. Most often, ready-made magnetic boards are not too large, and it is possible to purchase a large panel only to order.

Method 4. Attaching the slate board to neodymium magnets. This method is good because it allows you not to paint the refrigerator and, if desired, you can easily remove the chalk board.

Please note that the refrigerator does not have its own handles; its doors open using handles screwed to a chalk board

What you will need:

  • Thin sheet of plywood (3-6 mm);
  • Slate paint, primer (preferably), paint brush/roller, ditch;
  • Moldings for framing boards;
  • Jigsaw or hand saw;
  • Neodymium magnets with holes for screws (the price of one magnet is about 80 rubles, their number and adhesion strength depend on the weight of the board).

This super magnet is the size of ruble coin Easily holds 3 kg weight

  • Screwdrivers (according to the number of magnets), screwdriver;
  • Stickers on furniture legs (they are needed to avoid scratches on the surface of the doors, as well as chips on the magnets themselves. Such stickers are sold in Ikea and construction stores. If desired, you can glue pieces of thin rubber or fleece-type fabric onto the magnets);
  • Furniture handle for each board/door and screws for fastening.

Instructions:

Step 1. We measure the parameters of one or two refrigerator doors.

Step 2. Cut boards from a sheet of fiberboard exactly to the size of the doors.

Step 3. Paint the board with primer and wait for it to dry. Next we apply the first layer slate paint, let it dry, apply the next layer and leave again for the time recommended by the manufacturer. Finally, apply a third coat of paint (optional).

Step 4. While the paint is drying, unscrew the original handles of your refrigerator.

Step 5. Cut and mount the moldings on the board (you can use wood glue). If desired, the moldings can be painted.

Step 6. Now we glue a protective pad on each magnet, then screw all the magnets onto reverse side boards. Be careful and strictly (!) follow the rules for working with neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are small magnets, but very powerful. They are sold in special online stores in the most different forms, sizes and capacities (adhesion strength is indicated on the packaging). For our project, flat magnets are suitable so that the gap between the board and the door is not too large. The main thing is that the total adhesive force of the magnets exceeds the weight of your board twice (!), otherwise it will slide down.

Step 7. Hurray! The board is ready. Now we attach furniture handles to it.

Step 8: Now it's time to install the board(s). Try opening each door by pulling the handle, if the board doesn't move and the door opens easily then your project is complete. If you feel that the board is not magnetized to the door tightly enough, add a few more magnets.

Method 2. Vinyl stickers

Vinyl stickers are easy to stick and come off without a trace, they are inexpensive and are sold in the most different designs, and therefore they can be changed often according to your mood. For example, they can decorate a refrigerator geometric shapes, images of animals, plant and floral motifs, words and phrases.

  • Vinyl stickers can be purchased at hardware stores, craft stores, various online stores (for example, Aliexpress), and can also be ordered from a printing house.
  • You can cut simple refrigerator stickers with your own hands from self-adhesive paper.

Method 3. Film or magnetic panels with photo printing

Want to turn your refrigerator into a realistic phone booth, a retro soda fountain, or a bottle of your favorite drink? Or maybe you just want to transfer it to the door beautiful photo your authorship? Then your choice is vinyl film or magnetic vinyl (magnetic panel) with photo printing. Both coating options can not only decorate the refrigerator, but also protect its facades from scratches and dirt.

  • Film with photo printing differs in that it is glued by smoothing it manually or under the influence of warm air(at home this is done with a hairdryer). The latter easily fits even on rounded doors and corners of the refrigerator. Both types of film are suitable for decorating the entire body of equipment.

How to glue a sticker with photo printing on the refrigerator with your own hands? The first step is to degrease the surface with any degreaser or alcohol solution. The handles on the door must first be removed, and other protruding parts should also be removed. Then the film is carefully applied and simultaneously smoothed with some flat object (for example, by bank card), smooth out bubbles and wrinkles. Next, the film is folded along the edges, also smoothed, and the excess is cut off with a stationery knife. Finally, the handles are screwed into place.

  • Magnetic panels are flexible sheets of vinyl 0.5 mm thick with a magnetic back side and photo printing on the front side. Essentially, these are just large magnets that are made exactly to the size of the doors (but no more than 60 cm in width). Most often, doors are decorated with magnetic panels, but they can also be used to decorate the sides of the refrigerator. Magnetic vinyl is easy to install and remove without leaving any traces.

Method 4. Painting in a bright color, matching the headset or walls (+ master class)

You can update an old refrigerator or fit appliances into the interior simply by painting it with metal paint. The main thing here is to choose the right color.

  • If you paint the refrigerator to match the wall or cabinetry, it will seem less bulky. This technique is especially good for small kitchens .

  • If the interior of your kitchen seems too boring to you, then the refrigerator can be painted in a very bright color.

  • In the interior of the kitchen in retro style, country or Provence a red or red refrigerator will look great pastel color– light pink or pale blue.

The best and easiest way to paint a refrigerator with your own hands is with spray paint. Ideally, it should be particularly resistant alkyd enamel or acrylic paint on metal. Paints in cans are also suitable, but in this case it is important to use high-quality paint brush to achieve a perfectly smooth finish.

Instructions:

Step 1. Lightly sand the surface to remove the gloss. If there is rust or chips somewhere, then we also remove them and smooth them out with sandpaper.

Step 2. Clean and degrease the surface with an alcohol solution.

Step 3. Use masking tape to cover everything that we want to protect from painting; cover the refrigerator compartment with film. Don't forget to lay film or newspapers on the floor and open the window.

Step 4. Shake the can well and begin to spray the paint in an even thin layer and let it dry, then apply the second and third coat (if necessary). Remember that instead of one thick coat of paint, it is better to apply two thin ones.

  • To improve the durability of the paint and make it easier to apply, it is advisable to first coat the surface with a primer.

Step 5. Cover the surface with matte or glossy varnish, which will make the new coating more durable and moisture resistant.

Method 5. Hand painting (+ video tutorial)

Hand painting can turn a refrigerator into a unique art object or simply into a very nice and “animate” piece of furniture. You can paint the technique with paints and brushes, special acrylic markers or airbrushes.

Method 6. Decoupage (+ master class)

Decoupage is a simple and great way update an old refrigerator, adapt it to the interior of a kitchen in a rustic or traditional style, add hand-painted or decorated moldings.

Decoupage of Side by side refrigerator

To decoupage the refrigerator you will need:

  • Multi-layer napkins with the desired print, or better yet, special cards for decoupage (they can be large in size, and the drawings themselves are already compiled into a composition);
  • Scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • Brushes: flat squirrel (for decoupage and applying varnish) and thin synthetic (for drawing details);
  • Pencil (for marking and sketching);
  • Acrylic paints;
  • Acrylic varnish (matte, glossy or with craquelure effect).

Instructions:

Step 1. Prepare the surface: degrease with an alcohol solution if you plan to glue the design onto a factory finish, or paint the refrigerator in the desired color and wait until the paint dries.

Step 2. Separate the layer with the pattern from the napkin and use scissors to cut out the desired element along the contour. Cut as many pieces as needed.

Step 3. Start gluing the first drawing: coat the underside of it with glue, place it in the desired place, then carefully smooth out the bubbles and folds with a brush, remove excess glue with a damp cloth using a tamping motion. Next, glue all the other blanks, moving from the center to the edges, starting with large and ending with small elements.

  • Before gluing the napkins, it is advisable to apply markings to the surface of the door.

Step 4. When the whole composition is put together, draw small details and contours.

Step 5. Apply matte or glossy varnish to the drawing in two or more layers to give it greater strength and moisture resistance.

Method 7. Decoration with moldings and “carved” parts (+ master class)

If your kitchen is decorated in a classic style, then a grandiose project of converting a refrigerator into... an antique sideboard will help you fit a free-standing refrigerator into its interior.

What you will need for decoration:

  • Moldings made of wood or PVC;
  • Carved furniture decor made of wood/PVC or stucco molding made of plaster/polyurethane in the shape of a crown, as well as patterned corners (if possible);
  • Saw for cutting moldings;
  • Glue for metal.

What you will need for painting:

  • Adhesive primer;
  • White chalk paint (you can make it yourself using recipes from the Internet or buy, say, from designer Daria Geller);
  • Chalk paint of the main color;
  • Painting brush, 1 round brush with a diameter of 8-7 cm (useful for both painting and waxing), a medium flat brush (for waxing);
  • Dark-colored wax (can be replaced with a mixture of colorless wax and dark brown paint);
  • The wax is colorless;
  • Painting supplies: film, masking tape etc.

Instructions:

Step 1. Remove the gloss from the surfaces with sandpaper, clean and degrease it with an alcohol solution.

Step 2. Make markings and glue the carved parts: crown, moldings, corners.

Step 3. Paint the refrigerator with white paint in two layers, allowing each layer to dry.

Step 4. Now, using a large round brush, roughly paint the refrigerator in the base color in one layer using a crisscrossing motion. This way you will achieve a worn effect.

  • The handles need to either be removed and come to terms with their absence, or painted too.
  • At this stage, the decor and baseboards can be painted with paint of the main color or white/gold/silver (in this case, the paint will get outside the decor, but this is not a big deal).

Step 5. Apply colorless wax to the baseboards and decor using a cloth or brush, let it absorb and dry, then rub in the excess with a paper napkin.

Step 6. Now apply dark wax to the decor and baseboards with a brush, then rub it in and remove the excess with paper napkins, achieving the desired antique effect.

In areas where the wax appears too dark, apply a little clear wax and wipe the surface with a paper towel.

Step 7. Now paint the entire refrigerator with colorless wax using the same large round brush (no need to wash it to remove paint residue!). When the wax is dry, remove the excess with a napkin. Ready!

Method 8. Decor with self-adhesive film

Remodeling a refrigerator with self-adhesive film is a budget-friendly and simple alternative to photo printing and painting. All you need to do to change the design of the refrigerator: degrease the surface and remove the handles, glue the film, simultaneously leveling it with a non-sharp flat object, then wrap it around the edges, trim off the excess and return the handles to their place.

  • Unfortunately, self-adhesive film Unlike film with photo printing, it does not have a lamination layer and wears out quickly. In addition, it fits worse on uneven and rounded surfaces.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

        What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay. And I remembered your detailed articles about these trades. area I re-read everything again and concluded that the courses are a scam. I haven't bought anything on eBay yet. I am not from Russia, but from Kazakhstan (Almaty). But we also don’t need any extra expenses yet. I wish you good luck and stay safe in Asia.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
