The canopy, as you know, is an ancient and useful invention. Once upon a time different peoples they served to protect from heat, drafts, flying insects or prying eyes. In our time and in our interiors, it must be admitted that a canopy is an absolutely useless thing and even collects dust. (Although in the summer, at the dacha or on the first floors of city high-rise buildings, they help fight mosquitoes). Whether the canopy is useful or not, it is still so damn attractive that few would refuse to spend the night under it and feel like royalty.

We tried to remain relatively serious on the eve of Valentine's Day and not prepare for it in full force, but the most romantic bedroom of a Barcelona apartment and a cottage for lovers in a magical Finnish hotel broke our spirit.

To stop being jealous, we delved into thinking about how to make our own canopies over our beds.

We schematically divided all the methods found into 14 categories (it also turned out symbolically).

1. Four-poster beds.

Buying a bed with a canopy structure attached to it, as, for example, in that very Finnish hotel, is simple and great idea. Especially if you are creating an interior in a Baroque or Moorish style. The originality of such a bed does not mean increased material costs. For example, many stores sell the base of such a bed made of wood and metal, the cost of which is approximately 25 thousand rubles. But, if there is someone in your family who knows how to wield a hammer, it is not difficult to make such a frame yourself by extending the lines of the legs to the top and connecting them with a square of beams.

2. Structures through which the fabric is thrown or from which it is suspended using loops and hooks can be suspended from the ceiling using fasteners screwed into it.

4. Special admirers of this decorative element specially adapt their ceiling to make their canopy look more impressive.

5. You can also screw regular curtain rods or towel rods to the ceiling.

6. For those who want to minimally injure their ceiling, a suitable method c fastening the canopy to one hook. You can hang a structure from it, through which you can throw fabric.

7. Such a round structure is very easy to build, for example, from an ordinary hula hoop.

8. Well, for those who don’t want to “punch holes” in the ceiling, we recommend curtain rods attached to the wall, for example, for towels or sinks. If your interior is not alien to elements of eco-design, the cornices can be replaced with real branches.

9. Another exotic idea to note: a canopy base from an old bed base.

10. Another type of canopy is fabric strung on a semicircle attached to the wall. Such a bracket is sold, for example, in the “Corner of Provence” and costs 10 thousand rubles. The range of cornices in the Interior Shop ranges in price from 12 to 14 thousand rubles.

11. As you can see, the cost ready-made version It’s hard to call it small. Without large material costs, but with a little resourcefulness, such a bracket can be replaced with a flower pot, which is sold in any hardware store, or a birdcage that has become actively fashionable.

12. The easiest and most cost-effective way is to drive nails into the wall and stretch a rope between them, through which the fabric will be thrown. If the arrangement allows, this rope can be tied to furniture or lamps. And if the bed is under a chandelier, you can even attach the fabric to it, having first, of course, assessed the safety of this action. Or attach the fabric to interior parts, for example, using clothespins.

13. If you are decorating country house or a balcony covered with wood, you can nail the fabric itself to the walls and ceiling, making a kind of canopy-sail.

14. The last method is the fastest and easiest - for those who have not yet dismantled the Christmas tree: a canopy made of garlands with light bulbs. In any case, no matter what way of showing tenderness to your loved ones and loved ones you choose, your care and attention is what is most dear to them on holidays and on weekdays.

Classic options for decorating walls in residential premises today coexist with a new (or long-forgotten old) method of decorating walls with textiles. You can bring a fresh decorating idea into the interior of your home with the help of curtains placed not only on window openings.

Where can you hang a curtain?

Decorative curtain fabrics in a house or apartment are used not only for decorating windows. Tapestry curtains look luxurious in the interior of a spacious living room, placed on one of the walls. 2. The bedroom will be decorated with transparent organza, which cascades onto the bed.
  3. The fabric for a canopy in the form of a dome should be light and voluminous. It can be silk, chintz, rep or satin.

To prevent the decoration of the space above the bed from looking too simple, it is possible to use lambrequins above the bed.

We hang a canopy over the bed

The question is how to make curtains over the bed so that sleeping place it looked like a cozy nest and was of interest to many. There are several ways to hang curtain fabric over the bed:

  • on wood, metal or plastic installed around the perimeter
  • on cornices that are mounted to the ceiling
  • if the sleeping place is located near the wall, a semicircular rod is mounted to its surface, having previously determined at what height to fix it
  • the canopy in the form of a dome is decorated using round design installed on the ceiling or suspended from it.

Canopy over the crib

For such bed models, you can purchase a ready-made set of curtains with a children's theme or decorate the bed yourself. You can drape the fabric in the form of a house or a camping tent. All models are divided into:

From such a variety they choose not only models for windows, but also curtains for walls, doorways or soft curtains. More than one book could be written about options for decorating rooms with curtains, so we will focus on just a few of them.

Sliding curtains in combination with curtains (tulle), decorated with lambrequin or without it, tied with cords or grabs, are classic version curtains. Such products fill the design of the room with splendor and sophistication. The relevance of the classics has been tested by time; it is still one of the popular decor options.

Curtains and interior style

To make the room look harmonious, its design is done in uniform style, which the curtains must correspond to:

In addition, the curtains must match general style premises, they must be harmoniously combined with furniture. Regardless of whether you are purchasing curtains for the wall or for the windows, take the issue seriously. The comfort and coziness in your home depends on your choice.

Many people associate the concept of “canopy” with oriental pomp and wealth, but the appearance of this design element is associated with a utilitarian reason. Initially, canopies were used as a comfortable cape that protected a sleeping person from wind, dust and annoying insects.

In Rus', the prototype of a canopy was a piece of ordinary chintz that was used to cover a baby’s cradle. This cape was practical and reliable: it saved the child from drafts, dust and insect bites. It was the cradle with a chintz dome that became the ancestor of the canopy bed.

Types and methods of fastening canopies

Thanks to the efforts of designers, the functional cape was transformed over time into an element of bed decoration, and today the canopy above the bed mainly serves decorative role. According to psychologists, a canopy gives a sleeping person a feeling of peace, comfort and security, so using a canopy in the interior is not only desirable, but also useful.

It is customary to distinguish the following types of canopies, the frame of which can:

  • attached to bed posts and placed under the ceiling;
  • attach directly to the ceiling;
  • have the shape of a tent and be attached only to bed posts;
  • have the shape of a circle or square, and the canopy itself, in this case, is attached to an axis passing through the center of the bed;
  • have the shape of a semicircular arc, attached to the wall at the head of the bed, then a piece of fabric thrown over the frame acts as a canopy.

Modern canopies over the bed often have an elaborate shape, made from textured fabrics or nonwovens. The canopy posts and frame are usually made of wood or metal. The choice of materials depends not only on the designer’s intentions, but also on the financial capabilities of the future owner of the canopy bed.

Children's canopy beds

Typically, parents choose such models for babies and toddlers. Of course, girls like canopies much more than boys. Any little princess will be delighted with such a bed, and boys may refuse to sleep under a canopy.

Canopies on girls' beds are usually made of pink or peach flowers. Other shades are acceptable, but it is preferable that they be gentle and warm. For teenage girls, the color scheme can be more varied.

As for the design, tent-shaped canopies or frames that give the bed the appearance of cozy house. Older girls and young girls will appreciate drapes at the head of the bed, which will make the room more feminine.

Decorate children's canopy can be a scattering of bright decorative flowers or strange butterflies. A garland attached to a canopy will not only give it original look, but will also solve the problem of night lighting.

Canopies for adults

They act as a design element, so it is necessary to combine them correctly with. If the room is decorated in classic style, for the canopy you should use dense, plain-dyed fabrics. A thin canopy with flounces or draperies will fit perfectly into baroque and rococo interiors. A translucent canopy will decorate the bedroom in oriental style, and a canopy for a hi-tec bedroom is best made from an unusual material.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

        What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay. And I remembered your detailed articles about these trades. area I re-read everything again and concluded that the courses are a scam. I haven't bought anything on eBay yet. I am not from Russia, but from Kazakhstan (Almaty). But we also don’t need any extra expenses yet. I wish you good luck and stay safe in Asia.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
