Today we will tell you how to make a laundry organizer with your own hands. In this article you will find a step-by-step master class with photos and some useful tips. This storage system can be adjusted to fit any size drawer. You can also choose the number of cells according to your own desire and taste.

This homemade organizer with cells is perfect for storing underwear or socks. You can also place scarves, ties, small tops and T-shirts in such storage systems. The size of the cells is determined depending on what you will put in them. This master class discusses an organizer for women's underwear for a standard drawer of a narrow chest of drawers.

What do we need?

  • thick cardboard
  • covering fabric
  • sewing thread

How to make an organizer?

First you need to measure the box and decide on the desired dimensions. This example examines the process of manufacturing a laundry organizer measuring 50x30x10 centimeters.

Cut the cardboard into strips. We need to cut two long edges (50 cm in length and 10 cm in height) and two shorter edges (30 cm in length). It is also necessary to make blanks for the cells (in this case, 14 pieces of 15 cm each). The last details are jumpers, the size of which corresponds to the desired width of the cells.

An organizer for underwear looks more aesthetically pleasing and becomes more convenient if it is covered with fabric rather than simply left in cardboard. That is why we need to take the fabric and cut it into strips of 50 and 30 cm (in addition, we need to add 1 cm on each side for hems).

We glue our cardboard strips onto the fabric as shown in the photo - i.e. leave small gaps for the slots. It is better to sew the edges of each strip on a machine for reliability.

The external part of the storage system is done separately. We then simply sew the previously prepared dividers onto the fabric left around the edges to secure it in place.

At this stage, you can sew the bottom of the laundry organizer. It is made of cardboard, and then covered with fabric and hemmed on the outside. However, if your box is fairly level, you can leave the storage system without a bottom - it will be no less convenient.

Every housewife is familiar with the situation when, when opening a drawer with laundry, they find not neatly aligned piles of things, but complete chaos. This happens because of the delicate material from which underwear, socks and tights are made. The finest lace and the most delicate nylon do not hold their shape and flow not only over the body, but also over the chest of drawers, creating a mess there. Again and again you have to rearrange things, restoring order. A DIY laundry organizer can solve this problem.

This practical and elegant storage unit is like a genie that will keep all your things strictly in their places and not get mixed up.

Linen house made of cardboard

You can buy a ready-made laundry organizer in a store, but it’s much nicer and more creative to make it yourself. In addition, this is a less expensive way to obtain a case.

Boxes for storing linen can be textile or cardboard. This is an individual preference of each individual person.

A simple master class on making an organizer for underwear from cardboard will inspire you to create this storage unit.

To create the product we will need any boxes. This could be packaging for shoes, household appliances or toys.

The size of the future linen chest depends on the place where it will be located. Based on this, we choose a suitable box or glue it ourselves.

Also for work you will need:

  1. Paper for decorating the box: old wallpaper, newspapers, pages of a music book, sheets from glossy magazines, colored paper;
  2. Long ruler. It is more convenient to use than a short-length tool;
  3. Brush and PVA glue;
  4. Stapler with staples;
  5. Simple pencil;
  6. A utility knife or sharp scissors.

Let's start tinkering. First, let's think about how many things will be stored in this box. The number of cells into which we will divide the organizer depends on this.

Based on the size of the cabinet where the linen chest will be stored, we determine the height of the box. Measure out what you need and trim off the excess with scissors.

Don't throw away the rest of the box. They are useful for making partitions. The lid will also serve this purpose. The optimal cell size is 7x7 cm or 8x8 cm. Based on these data, we mark the box and cut out blanks for the walls.

We decorate the details at our discretion. A box covered with old newspaper clippings or sheets of music will look impressive. For a classic, simple design, you can choose plain wallpaper.

The inside of the box itself is glued to match the partitions. It is better to choose wear-resistant paper for decoration. A bright and contrasting design with several colors and paper textures will look interesting and unusual. It is better to start work from the sides and finish with the bottom.

We decorate the outer side of the organizer with scrap paper, fabric or thick packaging material. Small allowances and folds made from paper of a different quality and color look beautiful.

We assemble a grid from blanks for cells. To do this, we make cuts on the parts to the middle of the height and connect them as shown in the photo.

We insert the grille into the box and secure it with a stapler or glue. The product is ready!

The video will help answer the questions that arise when making a linen organizer with your own hands.

Ribbon organizer

If for some reason the storage for stockings and tights made from boxes turns out to be short-lived, you can make a more practical design - an organizer made of fabric.

The advantages of this product are that it is durable, takes up minimal space in the closet, is mobile and fits on any shelf.

To work, you need a strong, bright fabric for the base; lower density fabric of a different color for partitions; padding polyester; decorative edging.

Let's move on to step-by-step instructions. Cut out two rectangles. One is made of padding polyester, and the second is made of fabric for the base. Their dimensions should be smaller than the area of the box so that the future box does not wrinkle. We sew on the long storage partitions. To do this, rectangles of contrasting fabric are sewn onto the base. They are the same in length as the base, and twice as wide as the walls of the box. We sew the blanks in the middle, folding them so that the seam is on the inside. You will get a double partition.

Let's draw the wall based on the number of cells needed.

Sew the rectangles, indenting from the edge by 1.5 cm.

We sew transverse partitions from fabric folded in half. Turn out, iron.

We sew small pieces together.

We sew the sides for the future organizer and attach them to the product.

We decorate the top and ends of the finished box with braid.

The finished organizer can be used for its intended purpose.

My next boast is an underwear organizer!

If you have an Ikea nearby or have the patience to wait for your order to arrive, don’t waste your nerves, energy and time on this “nonsense.”
I spent all my evenings on it for two weeks. Well, how I spent it - quietly sewing, pricking my fingers with a needle, learning to work with a thimble, watching all sorts of films with one eye, drinking tea, petting cats...
In general, sometimes I like the process itself more than the achieved result. It’s also easier and faster for me to make something myself than to go out and buy it. I remember once I tore my favorite brown-chocolate tights at the ankle, so while I was getting a new pair of exactly the same ones, I already managed to do embroidery on the old ones. And I love them more and wear them more often than the new ones)))
This is all to say that my perfectionism does not sleep and constantly spoils my mood - I love order in everything! I love it when every thing has its own place, when you close your eyes and without hesitation you can say in which drawer of the chest of drawers lies the piece of paper / colored pencils / charger from an old phone / swimming pool cap that you need right here and now. Ooooh, how I freak out when I don’t find a thing in its place, or I find it, but where, by definition, it shouldn’t be there. Well, for example, a TV remote buried among kitchen spatulas, bottle openers and knives. And as luck would have it, the “burrower” doesn’t turn out to be under my hot hand, and damned perfectionism doesn’t give me the patience to leave everything as it is and poke the offender’s nose in the face, I’m rushing to put everything in its place...
Needless to say, every morning, opening the drawer with my underwear, I saw a bunch of women’s things, absolutely not systematized. And it pissed me off again!

And then I saw HIM - an organizer!

And if such a miracle was sold in our town, I would buy it without hesitation! Well, or at least turn it over in your hands and understand the principle of assembly. Patamushta, when I, inspired by the idea, cut it out and started sewing, I didn’t “invent” the bicycle the first time.
But if your hands are golden, it doesn’t matter where they come from! If I haven’t fought off the desire yet, I’ll tell you how this “miracle” happened to me.

First you need to take the dimensions of the box: length, width and depth (height).
My standard dresser drawer was 76 cm long, 43 wide, 13 high.

From single-layer padding polyester and the main fabric, I cut out one rectangle measuring 75*42
The dimensions of the rectangles must be specially reduced by one or two centimeters from the dimensions of the box so that the organizer fits freely into the box and does not shrink or bulge.
The blue rectangle can be put aside for now - we will need it at the very end.

And on the white one (this is the base of the organizer) we sew long rectangles (these will be the walls of the cells). The blue organizer just seemed boring to me, so I also took orange-white fabric.
The length of the rectangles is equal to the length of the base, and the width is equal to twice the height of the box (minus a couple of centimeters - again, so that nothing gets in the way when closing/opening). We sew the rectangles in the middle, fold the sides together, the seam is inside, and our partition turns out to be double - for additional rigidity and hiding all the seams and edges.
I sewed the outer walls of the organizer the other way around - with the fold up.
I found the distance between the partitions empirically, folding bras in different ways in an optimized and ergonomic way and measuring the width.

The number and length of the cells also directly depends on the size of the hostess’s bust)) (here I have already drawn the boundaries).

No need to sew all the way to the edge! Leave a centimeter and a half - then you will understand why.

Now it's a matter of small partitions. Have you determined the width? We add half a centimeter on each side for seam allowances, but on the contrary, we reduce the height by a centimeter. We also make double partitions - we sew such “bags” - as many as we have partitions. (I got 24 pieces). You shouldn’t cut everything to the same size at once - you need to periodically check the width between the long partitions (or, initially, sew them perfectly and precisely down to the millimeter).
So, we sew the “bags” together and turn them inside out. To ensure that the corners turn out well, you can cut them off a little. And then all the parts need to be steamed with an iron - this will turn out more evenly and accurately, and it will be easier to work.

We close the cut of the “bag” with bias tape or ribbon folded in half.
Well, now we face, perhaps, the longest process of our creativity: sew small partitions to large ones (along pre-marked lines) from the beginning on one side, then on the other. This is what 90% of the time will be spent on)))

Remember, we didn’t stitch long partitions all the way to the edge? Now we sew both halves together along the short side (along the height), turn them inside out, and steam them with an iron.

Cover the top edges with bias tape or tape. And from the sides along the edges we sew rectangular walls, folded upward (as we did before on the long side).

We sew the dangling long partitions to the short side wall.

We combine the sections of the side walls in height, stitch them, cover the sections with bias tape or tape - this is the corner you will get.

Well, now is the time to remember about the large rectangle that was set aside at the very beginning. We place it at the bottom of our structure and sew it along the perimeter (I stitched it in a zig-zag pattern so that during further work the threads from the cuts would not interfere).

Aaaand, the final stage - we close the edges around the perimeter with bias tape or tape. Particular attention should be paid to the corners - so that nothing puffs up, so that there are no folds!

Let’s take it to the “trying on” soon!

And now the most enjoyable part - we put everything in its place, admire the perfect order and praise ourselves twice a day)))

But if you really want such a useful thing, but laziness or your pens are directed in the other direction, then you can find ready-made organizers for laundry, as well as drawers for shoes, boxes for hats, vacuum bags and a million other things needed for organizing order!
You can also read about some ready-made organizers.

To prevent small items from rubbing in the closet, it is better to store them in separate boxes or drawers. Organizer for socks and panties - a convenient device for underwear. With its help, you can organize all the “small things” and distribute them by color to make it easier to find the right thing.

What types of laundry organizers can there be?

You can make your own laundry organizer from fabric, plastic, wood or a cardboard box.

An organizer for panties and socks significantly reduces the time spent searching for a pair or the right set. In addition, it allows you to maintain order in your closet or chest of drawers. This device will allow you to separate laundry and organize children's, women's and men's clothes.

Linen organizer

Organizers are divided into several classifications:

  1. By type of material from which they are made:
  • You won’t be able to make plastic ones yourself, but you can easily order them online (on the Aliexpress website you can find hundreds of different polymer organizers);
  • wooden ones can be purchased ready-made, which go into the drawers of the chest of drawers, or you can make them yourself if you have the materials and necessary tools at hand;
  • cardboard can be made from boxes or sheets of cardboard;
  • fabric - sewn from dense material, often denim.

Wooden organizer
  1. By type of mounting in the cabinet:
  • vertical (hanging) - installed in a closet and made of fabric or dense polyethylene, based on hangers for ease of placement;
  • horizontal - most often made of cardboard or ready-made cells for a closet are purchased.

Note! If you sew an organizer from old jeans, it is recommended to boil them in boiling water first so that they do not fade.

Vertical organizer

What you need to make your own from fabric

To make a sock organizer with your own hands, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • cardboard boxes or large sheets of cardboard;
  • fabric (can be shreds);
  • glue, it is better to use a silicone gun;
  • wallpaper or sheets from magazines to decorate the organizer;
  • ruler and pencil to measure and mark everything exactly.

You can make your own organizer for tights from a shoe box. Boxes from household appliances are also suitable. The main thing is to have a base in which the laundry compartments will then be installed.

The number and size of cells are prepared as desired. You can store one thing in each compartment, or arrange them by color. For example, white panties will be stored in one cell, black socks in the second, etc. For small children, it is better to put one thing in each cell, so that it is more convenient for the baby to take clean laundry on his own, without outside help.

How to sew a laundry organizer with your own hands from fabric

Instead of buying an organizer for tights, panties and bras, you can make it yourself. There are some advantages to this: firstly, you can build a structure of the desired size. Secondly, improvised means are used and there is no need to spend money. Thirdly, a homemade organizer can be decorated as desired, made in any color.

Fabric organizer

The laundry organizer (36×36×8 cm) is made as follows:

  1. First you need to make a drawing in order to correctly calculate the length of the stripes. For example, the organizer will have 8 cells 9x9 cm and 4 cells 8x18 cm (convenient to use for storing bras. The length of the overall structure will be 36 cm, making it convenient to place in a dresser or closet drawer.
  2. When the project is drawn, it is easy to calculate how long the strips for the partitions should be. The first partition is attached from the corner to a square cell of 9x9 cm. This means that it should be 18 cm long, taking into account the allowance - 19 cm (0.5 cm on each side). In this way, all the partitions are calculated and the necessary strips are cut out of thick fabric (their width should correspond to the height of the box (in this case, 8 cm).
  3. Next, you need to cut the fabric into 4 pieces on the outer walls. 36x8 cm each, taking into account the allowance. And the fabric on the bottom according to the size of the overall design is 36×36 cm. Allowances of 1-1.5 cm on each side are sufficient.
  4. Next, you need to cut out the bottom and side walls from thick cardboard, which are inserted into the prepared side walls for density (or the cardboard is sheathed or covered with fabric - as is convenient for you).
  5. The strips for the partitions are sewn together and finished with bias tape.
  6. Then the side parts are sewn together, into which cardboard is immediately inserted as a seal and the bottom. You can make secret locks so that the cardboard can be removed and the cover washed.
  7. The last stage is connecting the structure to each other and decorating it. You can use lace, beads, bows, stickers - as much as your imagination allows.

Cardboard blanks

If you plan for the organizer to stand in a dresser drawer, you don’t have to decorate it on top, since it won’t be visible anyway. If it is installed in the bedroom or bathroom (that is, in plain sight), then it is better to make a box with a lid and decorate it so that it fits seamlessly into the interior.

You can make an organizer in another way, in which the frame is made from ready-made boxes. The craftsman’s job is to sheathe or paste it with fabric, assemble it into one structure and decorate it. In order not to waste time and effort on installing cardboard, you can use narrow boxes of milk, baby food or cereals (such as Hercules). If you don’t have these on hand, then you can take sheets of cardboard and make square or rectangular dividers yourself.

Preparing a fabric partition

How to sew a fabric laundry basket

A fabric laundry basket is placed in a closet or chest of drawers. To store dirty laundry, it can be installed or hung in the bathroom for ease of use.

Fabric basket

To make a basket, you will need to prepare the necessary tools and materials in advance:

  1. In order for the basket to keep its shape, it is better to use dense fabric, such as calico or flannel, because fabrics like satin are thin and the basket will be deformed.
  2. A ruler, soap, chalk, padding polyester, and needles for joining fabric will come in handy.
  3. The pattern is made square or round as desired. Depending on the pattern, then you need to measure the length and width of the fabric and cut out the blanks.

The basket can be soft and shapeless or dense. To keep it in shape, you need to use a thick bottom or sew several metal rings into it (for a round basket). For square structures, you can use rods that are sewn into the corners and allow you to keep their shape, especially if the basket is high.

This design can be used to store dirty linen before washing, clean linen before ironing, to store towels or bedding sets, or for children's toys.

The simplest version of the basket is based on a ready-made cardboard box. You need to select a basket or box of the required size, measure it, cut out the sides and bottom and glue them to the finished frame. The top of the basket can be decorated with buttons, inscriptions, rhinestones and other accessories.

Folding basket

Can be used for linen, towels, bedding or for dirty clothes as a laundry basket. When gluing fabric to cardboard, it is better to use silicone glue or a gun. It is plastic, binds materials well and does not become limp under high humidity (unlike PVA glue, for example).

More complex versions of baskets can be made based on any materials:

  1. Wooden rods. To make such a basket you will need 4 wooden slats, 60 cm long, 2 tubes of 40 cm, and 2 of 35, and fasteners - bolts and nuts. Next, a frame on legs is made from slats, to which a fabric base is then attached. It looks like a large bag with loops and is attached to a frame. If necessary, the structure can be folded and it will take up minimal space.
  2. On a plastic frame. To do this, you can use a stationery bin (basket) made of plastic as a basis. Next, strips 3-5 cm wide are cut out of the fabric and trimmed (pasted) around the basket. You can put an embroidered laundry bag inside.

Wicker boxes and baskets are often used in households for storing laundry. They can be left in their original form, or decorated with fabric for beauty. When using drawers, you can make organizers divided into several sections. Their size depends on their purpose: for bath accessories you need to make larger compartments, for underwear - smaller ones.

Hanging basket

Another option for a fabric basket is a hanging one. In fact, it looks like a regular bag, only made of fabric. It can be closed with a lock, a button or not - as desired. The whole idea of such a basket is to mount it on the wall to save space. More often, such structures are used for dirty laundry and hung in the bathroom or closets.

In the end, it can be noted that many people are wondering how to sew a laundry organizer with their own hands from fabric or glued together from cardboard. In fact, it’s simple: you need to prepare a project, calculate the required dimensions, prepare materials and do it. Patterns and step-by-step instructions will depend on the model, size and type of organizer or basket.

Dresser organizer

You can purchase ready-made organizers, or you can use your imagination and use scrap materials to make original trays for small items - panties, socks, belts, etc.

Required materials and tools:
- a box (you can use a box for shoes or small household appliances) - a frame for a future organizer. To ensure that the organizer is strong, it is better to use a box made of thick thick cardboard.
- cardboard;
- a piece of fabric for finishing;
- scissors;
- Ruler and pencil;
- threads (for internal seams and finishing external cuts) and needles;
- PVA glue.

Robot stages:
1. Prepare all the materials needed for the master class. The manufacturing process will be more enjoyable and faster if everything you need is at hand. It is better to use thick fabric. It is better to choose the color of the fabric so that there is no need to wash the organizer covers too often.

2. First of all, you need to decide how many cells you need. Be sure to check whether the size you choose is suitable for your underwear. It is worth keeping in mind that the sizes of men's and women's underwear differ significantly. At the bottom of the box, draw a grid for future cells. Depending on the size and number of cells, it is worth calculating how many parts you need. Cut out parts for the organizer partitions from thick cardboard. Make slots on the finished parts to fasten the partitions. Fold the finished parts into a grid shape.

3. Using dividers, cut pieces of fabric. Allow seam allowance at the edges to ensure a neat appearance. Glue the finished partitions with fabric using PVA glue. Leave the partitions to dry under pressure overnight. When the partitions are completely dry, trim off the excess edges and threads. Cut slits in the partitions to connect the cells. Pva glue perfectly connects fabric and paper or cardboard without leaving marks on the fabric. Super glue can leave dark marks on fabric. PVA glue is non-toxic, so you don't need to use gloves while working, and it won't pose any risk to your laundry.

4. Sew an outer cover for the organizer. Take measurements of the box. Using a pencil, draw a rectangle on the fabric that will correspond to the size of the box (covering the bottom and outer walls). To make sewing more convenient, the folds of the fabric can be ironed. On the wrong side of the fabric, sew with a regular basting stitch in the shape of a cover. It is not necessary to process the outer edges of the cover; the edges will be covered by the inner cover. At the piece of fabric for the future cover, trim off the excess fabric that is formed when sewing the cover.

5. Sew the inner cover for the organizer. We sew the inner cover in the same way as the outer cover.
6. The outer edges of the inner cover should be sewn with decorative threads. This will protect the fabric from spilling threads and give the case completeness and neatness.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

        What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
