What does a slatted suspended ceiling consist of?

A slatted suspended ceiling is a suspension system of aluminum slats mounted on a special frame (combs) parallel to each other. The thickness of the slats ranges from 0.3 to 0.7 mm and has a special coating in different colors.

Advantages of slatted suspended ceilings

There is no need to waste effort on preparing or dismantling the old ceiling covering (priming, fighting fungus and mold).
Suspended ceilings hide flaws, electrical wiring, air ducts and other communications.
The design is lightweight and does not require reinforced fastening.
The ceiling easily tolerates sudden temperature changes and high humidity.
Easy to clean and long service life (more than 20 years).

An open slatted ceiling is a universal design solution for most rooms. Its design involves a combination of a main strip with a decorative insert, which is inserted into the slot space between two adjacent slatted panels. By using different color combinations (for example, white strip with chrome insert or chrome strip with gold insert), you can achieve a unique design in the ceiling space. According to their shape, open slatted ceilings are divided into Italian design and German design.
Italian design.
The slatted panels have rounded edges, which gives a soft visual appearance. Decorative inserts can be installed in ceilings with open joints, which look especially good in a contrasting color combination.

German design. German designed ceiling slats have rectangular edges. This gives a strict, but at the same time functional and harmonious look to the ceiling space. Decorative inserts can be installed in a ceiling with open joints, while in German design the strip and inter-slot profile of the same color look excellent.

Open-type perforated slatted ceilings perform their functions perfectly in all wet rooms, as well as in places where it is necessary to adjust acoustic parameters.

As you know, a suspended ceiling is a structure to which the facing material is attached. This can be a continuous finish with plasterboard or a plastic surface. Today we will talk about this type of decorative covering, such as a suspended slatted ceiling.

Slat ceiling kit

So, as we found out, the slatted ceiling consists of a structure that is attached to the main ceiling (base) and, in fact, a finishing coating, assembled from individual elements - slats.

The structure with which the plane of the finishing material can be suspended from the base consists of:

  • guide U-shaped profile, which is attached to the walls around the perimeter of the room,
  • suspensions attached to the ceiling plane on which they will be hung
  • stringers (in other words: traverses, combs) - aluminum or steel guide bars with holes into which special fastening teeth on the slats are inserted and snapped into place.

Narrow long panels - slats - are made of metal, usually aluminum, and have a certain profile that allows them to be joined together. Since the shape and design of these profiles are different, there is a division into types of slatted ceilings, namely: closed and open type.

Open slatted ceiling

It differs in that the decorative effect of this type of coating is achieved through the use of inserts between the main slats - layouts. They can be the same color and texture as the slats or a different color - in any case, they diversify the surface of the ceiling with a play of not colors, but light and shadows.

The dimensions of the slats and layouts can be, respectively: 84 and 6 cm or 84 and 16 mm.

The flashing can be a smaller insert that is “recessed” between the main slats, or it can be made from the same material and then mounted flush with the slats, creating a flat ceiling with groove joints, or recessed between them.

An open slatted ceiling can be plain or multi-colored - with a panel and insert of one, two or several colors. This allows you to combine shades and select them, fulfilling different decorative ideas.

Closed slatted ceiling

This type of ceiling differs from the previous one in that it consists of similar slats of different widths, which after installation form a continuous plane, the texture of which is determined by the seams between them. The slats have sizes: 75, 100, 150 mm. But there are also sets of different-sized slats: 100 and 25 mm, 150 and 25 mm, mounted in turn and diversifying the ceiling plane with a certain rhythm created by the seams.

A closed-type slatted ceiling, consisting of slats of different sizes, allows you to select a variety of color combinations in accordance with the design tasks set in a particular interior.

It is presented in the following colors: white (matte and glossy), gold stripe, beige touch, mirage, luxury chrome, etc. The collection includes light and pastel shades, optimal for decorating most rooms. The panels look organic, neat, beautiful. An insert is a decorative material that gives the ceiling individuality and sophistication. Mounted between main aluminum slats. Installation of the slatted ceiling can be done with or without inserts, forming a continuous surface with thin blind spaces.

Slat ceilings have a number of advantages: relatively inexpensive cost, versatility (can be installed in places with high humidity, in open areas), environmental friendliness, durability (service life is from 25 years), fire resistance, hygiene, soundproofing, light reflection, ease of installation of climate control systems and electrical wiring and quick access to them, a wide selection of colors. A variety of options for connecting slats allows you to create unusual artistic structures - the so-called multi-level slatted ceiling. These can be wavy surfaces made of slats of various colors, geometric shapes, hemispheres and stepped hanging structures. Lacquered aluminum panels are easy to clean, always look aesthetically pleasing, and can be dismantled and transported to another location at any time.

Accessories for slatted ceilings

The stringer, otherwise known as “comb,” is the main load-bearing element of the slatted ceiling. Attach directly to the ceiling or using hangers. It is made of stainless steel and has a special toothed shape for attaching slats and inserts. U-shaped profile - installed around the perimeter, usually at the border of the ceiling and wall. The U-shape allows it not to be attached to the wall, thereby eliminating sagging. The wall corner completes the slatted ceiling; it must be secured to the wall. Analogue of the U-shaped profile.

The range of finishing materials for ceilings on the construction market is large, and the differences between them are significant. The ceiling can be done on a budget by simply whitewashing or covering it with foam tiles, or you can spend decent money on a modern 3D ceiling with original compositions. Sometimes making a choice in favor of one solution or another is very problematic.

The modern building materials market allows you to finish the ceiling in more than ten ways.

A wide range of products not only makes it possible to select the necessary material, but can also lead one astray: at one point a person simply ceases to understand what is best for him to take. In this article we will look at one type of ceiling - slatted, compare it with other ceiling finishing options and decide where and when it is best to use it.

Before moving on to the main topic: types and types, features and installation of slatted ceilings, you need to briefly go over the other methods of finishing the ceiling of a room, or rather, at their strengths and weaknesses. Why is this necessary? When you have at least a minimum amount of knowledge about all possible options, it is easier to analyze and compare the main object of consideration with them, which makes it possible to make a more objective assessment.

Which is the best ceiling to make: a brief tour of the main types

For the most part, the question “which ceiling is better to make?” not quite correct. The development of construction technologies eliminates the concepts of good or bad, and the main emphasis falls on the place where this ceiling will be implemented: residential or non-residential premises, bedroom or bathroom, what is the interior design of the room, what are the requirements for the ceiling, etc.

A certain finishing method may be ideal for one type of area, but not applicable to another.

Let's look at the main finishing methods:

  1. Whitewash
  2. Painting
  3. Wallpapering
  4. Stretch ceiling
  5. Suspended ceiling

Painting, whitewashing and wallpapering are traditional methods of finishing ceilings that have come with us from the past. Despite this, they have a number of advantages, the main ones being: low price and ease of implementation. Anyone with minimal knowledge and skills can finish the ceiling of a room in this way. The disadvantages of these methods include moisture permeability, the need to periodically tint, whiten and glue such ceilings.

Ceilings made of plasterboard, which also include multi-level structures, can be made of any shape and size, painted in any color and lighting (most often spotlight) built into them. Plasterboard ceilings are not resistant to moisture and require periodic touch-ups.

Rack ceiling: main types and features

The suspended frame system includes load-bearing profiles (stringers, traverses or combs), hangers and plinths. The supporting profile is a strip with grooves necessary for fastening the slats. Most often, the profile is made of galvanized steel or aluminum. Suspensions are used in two types: on spokes and spring. The presence of skirting boards serves to give the structure an aesthetic appearance (they hide the edges of the panels).

There are two types of skirting boards - in the form of corners and U-shaped.

In addition to differences in the material of manufacture, slatted ceilings can be open and closed, as well as with a smooth and perforated structure.

Open slatted ceiling systems after installation, they have gaps where inserts of different colors are mounted to give the ceiling an original design. Closed slatted ceilings look like a homogeneous structure. Smooth panels- a classic implementation option. Perforated ones differ from them in better ventilation and sound absorption.

Advantages and disadvantages of slatted ceilings

Suspended ceilings based on slats have a number of features that distinguish them from other finishing methods. Due to their characteristics, they are best suited for finishing rooms with high humidity (bathrooms, dining rooms, swimming pools).

Many experts in the field of interior decoration claim that a slatted ceiling in a bathroom is the most optimal solution.

This is due to the material used. Steel, aluminum and some types of PVC tolerate moisture quite well.

In addition, slatted ceilings are durable and reliable structures that have the longest service life even in the most difficult conditions. Along with this, they have an aesthetic appearance, a variety of colors and textures, combining which you can achieve an original design that harmonizes with the rest.

Slatted ceilings are made from non-combustible materials, which significantly increases their fire resistance. At high indoor temperatures, such ceilings will not emit substances harmful to the human body.

Thanks to high-quality materials and their processing technology, slatted structures do not collect dust and mold does not form on them.

However, when using slatted ceilings, the height of the room will decrease by 4-10 cm, which is very noticeable for apartments with low ceilings. And if there is a need to dismantle part of the structure, this can cause a number of problems. If there are communications under such a ceiling that require periodic maintenance, then the constant assembly and disassembly of the rack structure can significantly affect its appearance and condition.

Do-it-yourself slatted ceiling installation

Installing a slatted ceiling is a fairly simple procedure that anyone can perform. To install the structure we will need the following: tape measure, marker, and puncher, metal scissors, knife, screws, dowels and water level.

The installation process begins with markings: it is necessary to measure the level where the ceiling will be mounted. The distance between the supporting ceiling structure varies from 6 to 12 cm. It depends on your needs and the communications that run on the ceiling. To determine the level, it is better to use a water level and mark the line with a paint cord or fishing line. Wall profiles are mounted along the marked line using dowels, which should be driven in at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other. The first dowel is driven in at a distance of 5-7 cm from the wall. The profile itself is connected to the wall at the inner corners, the outer corners are cut at an angle of 45 degrees to give an aesthetic appearance.

THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
