Having gone through many articles with loud titles “we will help you replace the upholstery on chairs”, “how to easily and simply replace the fabric on the seat of a chair” - you will see mountains of text with incomprehensible names of tools, intricate turns of phrase and photos “Before” and “After” . But many are interested in precisely what to do “Between”.

We try to add a lot of photos, set concise descriptions and describe only simple projects that anyone can do. So let’s start a new project: “Reupholstering a Chair.”

You will need: Chair upholstery fabric, black fabric, batting, flathead screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, scissors, pliers, furniture stapler.

Step 1: Remove the seat cushion. Use a screwdriver (Phillips or flat head) and remove all the screws that hold the cushion to the chair frame.

Step 2: Let's start removing the staples. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the staples to loosen them.

Step 3: Remove the staples. Here you may need male power, so get your household members involved! Use pliers to remove the staples from the chair seat.

Step 4: Add new batting. If the batting in your chair is in decent condition, you can skip this step and breathe a sigh of relief :) But if it still needs replacing, then we recommend buying batting (it is sold in rolls in fabric stores), cutting it to the shape of the chair seat and gluing it hot glue to it.

Step 5: Selecting Upholstery Fabric. The difficulty of this step depends on the fabric you choose. If the fabric is plain, then covering a chair with it will be tantamount to a walk in the park! But if you have chosen fabric with a pattern (especially for lines), then you will have to approach this step responsibly. You will need 1-2 meters of plain fabric, or 2-3 meters of fabric with a pattern (since you will need to adapt to the pattern).

Using an example, we will show how to work with striped fabric. First, decide in which direction you want the stripes to appear on the chair. Place the fabric on the seat for better visualization. Make sure that horizontal lines- horizontal, and vertical - vertical :)

Step 6: Cut the fabric to size. Turn the seat with the batting upside down onto the fabric and cut a piece of fabric to fit the shape of the seat. Leave 5 cm of margin so that you can wrap the fabric or correct the design.

Step 7: Checking the pattern. After you have cut a piece of fabric, double check that the pattern is in place. If you are afraid of making a mistake, pin the fabric around the perimeter to the batting.

Step 8: Secure the fabric with a stapler. Make final adjustments to the pattern and stretch the fabric so that it does not sag anywhere. Now secure the fabric with a furniture (construction) stapler. The distance between staples should be 1-2 cm.

Step 9: Cut out the fabric “lining”. It is the presence of this step that transfers this project from the “do-it-yourself” category to the “pro” category. To hide staples and imperfections upholstery fabric under the chair, we will use black “facing” fabric. Place the seat on the fabric and cut to shape. In this case, there is no need for a margin; rather, on the contrary, the lining should not protrude beyond the edges of the chair.

Step 10: Fix the black fabric. Fix the fabric with a stapler, try to make sure that the staples fit tightly together in one row.

Prices for reupholstery and repair of chairs

    There can be a great many reasons to renew old chairs or decorate new ones with your own hands. This includes the need to adapt furniture to the interior, the desire to correct design flaws, restore chairs inherited from a grandmother or found for next to nothing on flea market. In this material we will talk about 4 ways to transform your “four-legged friends” (including office and garden chairs) beyond recognition, and we will also present 70 cool photo ideas for alterations.

    Method 1: Painting a chair

    Even the most old-fashioned or simply ordinary chair, say, a “Viennese” wooden, plastic, folding or office chair, can be transformed by painting. The main thing here is to choose the right color. Here are some inspiring examples where color alone saved furniture from ending up in a landfill.

    Old Viennese chair before and after renovation

    A few more examples of remaking the most common ones Viennese chairs made of bent beech, which can be found in almost every home or cottage.

    Here are a few cool ideas painting stools.

    Inspired? Then let's get to practice!

    To paint the chair you will need:

    • Acrylic paint, or preferably chalk paint, in one or more colors;
    • Synthetic flat brushes (separately for primer, paint and varnish);
    • Protective gloves (better to buy at a pharmacy);
    • Primer for wood/metal (depending on the frame material);
    • Wax or matte varnish (polyurethane or acrylic);
    • Medium to fine grit sandpaper.

    How to paint a chair with your own hands:

    1. Prepare the chair for painting: wash it from rough dirt and dust, then sand it with medium-grit sandpaper to remove upper layer old varnish or paint. The surface should be slightly rough.

    • If you want to update metal chair, then it is not necessary to sand it (although it is safer to sand the top gloss), but before priming/painting the frame must be degreased with white spirit.
    • Also, you can avoid the tedious sanding step if you use chalk paint, but you won’t be able to do without a primer.
    • If your chair is varnished, it can be removed special means for removing varnish.
    1. If the chair has any damage, such as scratches, chips or cracks, fill them with furniture putty.

    1. Wipe the chair from dust, wait for it to dry and apply two layers of primer to the entire frame, allowing each layer to dry for about a day. Between layers, it is advisable to sand the primer with fine-grained sandpaper (no. 220 is suitable).
    2. Take a new brush and paint the chair in 2-3 layers, allowing each layer to dry completely. Make sure that the paint does not smudge.

    • If you want to paint a chair with a distressed effect, then first apply a dark paint, say dark gray or dark blue, to some places (for example, the edges of the seat, back and armrests), and then cover them with wax. Next, you should paint the chair with the main paint in 2-3 layers. And finally, lightly work with fine-grained sandpaper to expose the dark “substrate”.

    • Do you want to achieve the effect of a perfect factory paint job? Then be patient: every coat of primer and paint (except finishing layers) will have to be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. This way the coating will be as smooth and reliable as possible.
    • To paint only certain parts or parts of the chair, use masking tape.
    1. Treat the chair with wax or matte varnish. Voila, your " four-legged friend» found new life!

    Helpful Tips:

    • Don't know what color to paint your chair? You can't go wrong if you paint it white, because this color is the most versatile and goes well with any bright upholstery;
    • Before painting, you can glue the stucco decor to the back of the chair using wood glue;
    • Achieve the effect of a very old and dirty chair in Provence style, you can use dark brown wax;
    • Chalk paints are relative new type paint, which has not yet gone on general sale. However, we recommend using it, because due to its thickness, increased adhesive properties and super-fast drying (in 30 minutes), it saves a lot of time and effort. In Russia, you can purchase chalk paints from designer Daria Geiler, and in Kazakhstan – from Vernenskaya Manufactory. You can also always order paints foreign manufacturers— Annie Sloan and Rustoleum.

    Method 2. Seat reupholstery

    Most often, if the stool has soft seat, then painting the frame is not enough to renew it completely - you need to change the upholstery. Here are some photo examples of how reupholstering a seat can turn an old chair into a stylish piece of decor.

    Office chair before and after painting, replacing the back and seat upholstery

    By the way, if your chair or stool does not have a soft seat, then you can make it yourself: first cut the MDF base exactly to the shape of the seat, then follow our master class, upholster it and, finally, screw it to the chair frame with self-tapping screws.

    To make a soft seat for a stool, just glue the foam rubber directly to the base, and then cover it with fabric, driving the stapler staples into inner side seats.

    Stool with homemade upholstery

    To work you will need:

    • Anti-stapler (or its alternative);
    • Furniture stapler and staples no higher than the thickness of the seat base;
    • Textile;
    • Foam rubber about 4 cm thick;
    • Batting or padding polyester;
    • Scissors;
    • Serrated bread knife (with teeth);
    • Screwdriver.

    How to reupholster a chair with your own hands:

    1. First we need to remove the seat from the chair frame using a nail puller or a screwdriver.
    2. Filming old upholstery using an anti-stapler and remove the filler if it is worn out (if it is in good condition, then it can be reused). Next, wipe the base of the seat from dust and dirt.
    • If the wooden base of the seat seems too old and unreliable, use it as a template to cut out a new seat from plywood.
    1. We place the seat on the foam rubber, trace its outline and cut it out.

    1. We cut the fabric and batting in such a size that they can be wrapped around all sides of the seat (along with foam rubber), leaving 10-15 cm free. This excess is needed to make it more convenient to stretch the material.
    2. So, we have four blanks: base, foam rubber, batting/sintepon and fabric. Now we need to put it all into a sandwich. First of all, we spread the batting, put foam rubber on it, and on the foam rubber - the base of the seat, wrong side up. Next, we simply fold the edges of the batting over the seat and, slightly stretching the material, fix it with a stapler. The corners of the batting can be cut off, or you can simply bend them and fasten them in the same way.

    How to restore a chair seat

    1. Once all the batting is attached to the seat, trim off any excess batting.

    • If desired, the foam rubber can be pre-glued to the base or stapled around the perimeter, retreating 5 mm from the edge of the seat.
    1. The most crucial moment has come - the stage of reupholstering the seat with fabric. Spread the fabric with the wrong side up and place the seat on it. Next, fold the edges of the fabric along one side and secure with a stapler. Now lightly stretch the fabric over the opposite side of the seat and secure it with a stapler.

    Repeat the procedure on the remaining two sides and start decorating the corners - they need to be wrapped as shown in the photo below.

    Chair after restoration

    1. We return the seat to its place and fix it with the “original” fasteners.

    Helpful Tips:

    • The soft seat of the chair can be additionally decorated with furniture nails around the perimeter.
    • The upholstery fabric should be selected in accordance with the style of the chair. So, for example, for modern chair Traditional jacquard fabric will not work, and a classic chair with an elegant back is unlikely to “make friends” with fabric with a newfangled geometric print.
    • The same fabric from which your curtains are made is ideal for upholstering a chair. In the interior, such a coincidence will look very harmonious.
    • The print on the fabric can echo the carved crossbars as shown in the photo below.

    Method 3. Decoupage a chair with paper

    Do you want to decorate a chair with a cool print or cover up minor defects like scratches and stains with patterns? This can be done using the decoupage technique.

    Chair decoupage idea

    You will need:

    • Any paper with the desired print, for example, it can be multi-layer napkins, pages from magazines and books, geographic Maps, posters, wallpapers, etc.;
    • PVA glue;
    • Brushes 2 pcs (for applying glue and varnish);
    • Scissors;
    • Transparent matte acrylic or polyurethane varnish;
    • Water (if necessary);
    • Roller for working with large formats.

    How to update chairs using decoupage technique:

    Step 1. Clean the chair from dirt and stains, paint if necessary, following the first instructions in the article.

    Step 2. Cut out the fragment that you need from the selected printing. The workpiece can be either large (for example, in the shape of the seat and back) or very small.

    • If you use napkins, you first need to separate the top layer with the pattern and only then cut it out.
    • If you want to cover the entire chair, including the legs, you need to randomly tear the paper into small pieces approximately 10x10 cm, as shown in the following photo slider.

    • To decoupage the back and seat, they need to be removed from the chair frame using a screwdriver, and then used as a template for cutting the workpiece (see photo below).

    Step 3. Generously coat the area you want to decorate with PVA glue and place your design on it, then smooth with a brush with the remaining glue, releasing all air bubbles and smoothing out the folds.

    • If the cut out print is small, then it is better to apply glue not to the chair, but to the back side of the workpiece itself.
    • If the paper is very thick, then you need to moisten it a little in water - this will make it more flexible.

    • A top layer of glue is not necessary, but is often desirable (it should be thin in any case).

    Step 4. Repeat step 3 with the other parts of the chair and leave the glue to dry for about a day.

    Step 5: Cover decorated areas or the entire chair with clear varnish in 4 layers, allowing each layer to dry completely. Ready!

    Method 4. Decoupage a chair with fabric

    It would seem that there is no other way to radically modify a chair with your own hands other than by painting. In fact, there is another cool way - decoupage with fabric.

    • A chair updated in this way will last a surprisingly long time, even under heavy loads. And if individual threads come out of the fabric along the edges of the chair, you can simply cut them off and treat them with a layer of PVA glue.

    Decoupage idea for an old chair

    You will need:

    • Textile;
    • Wooden chair;
    • PVA glue or special glue for decoupage;
    • A sharp stationery or breadboard knife;
    • Brush for applying glue.

    How to update a chair using decoupage technique:

    Step 1. Using a screwdriver, remove the back and seat from the chair. If you want to paint the chair, do it before taking it apart.

    Step 2: Spread the fabric over flat surface, place the seat on it and trace it along the contour, stepping back about 2.5 cm from the edge, then cut out the workpiece.

    Step 3: Cover outside your seat with PVA glue, then place the fabric on it and smooth it out. Once the fabric is straight, coat it with PVA glue and leave to dry overnight.

    Step 4: Once the fabric is dry, make sure it is completely stiff. Next, trim the excess fabric with a sharp knife exactly along the edges of the seat.

    Step 5: Now coat the perimeter of the seat with PVA glue again to prevent wear around the edges.

    Step 6: Repeat steps 2-5 with the chair back and other parts you want to decorate and finally put the chair back together. Main condition successful restoration chair - the pattern must accurately repeat the shape of the surface being decorated.

    Stool decoupage ideas

    You can breathe new life into your favorite chairs by removing the worn upholstery and replacing it with new ones. And reupholstery is a great way to fit your favorite furniture into color scheme updated room interior. The method of reupholstery will depend slightly on the type of chairs. Here are some standard methods.

    Steps

    Part 1

    We remove furniture nails and other fasteners

    This section is about how to remove furniture nails and other sharp fasteners. If you used staples to secure it, go to another section.

      Bring the chisel to the edge of the nail head or other fastener.

      Tap the tip of the chisel with a wooden mallet.

      Use the lever to gently lift the nail (or other fastener) upward. Repeat the procedure carefully until the nail is freed from the wood.

      Place the removed nails in a bag or immediately throw them in the trash. This is to prevent you from accidentally stepping on sharp objects.

      Part 2

      Removing the staples

      This section deals with the large, heavy-duty type of staples that hold upholstery fabric in place.

      1. Use the adjuster to remove the staples. This is a specialized tool used in the wallpaper craft to remove staples from furniture. It can be bought online in specialized stores.

        Place the end of the adjuster under the center of the bracket. Use the lever to lift the adjuster up, pressing against the edge of the wood.

        • If the wood is polished or this part of the chair is exposed, place a metal plate or cloth under the adjuster so that the lever touches it and not the wood. This way there will be no marks left due to pressure from the regulator.
      2. Wait until one end of the staple appears. The second one usually stays inside.

        Take pliers or side cutters and grab the staple. Pull up and twist slightly to remove the bracket completely from the wood.

        Repeat the procedure until you have pulled out all the staples. Some people prefer the conveyor method: first they lift all the staples with a regulator, and then pull them out with pliers, so as not to constantly switch from the regulator to the pliers on each staple.

      Part 3

      Removing the fabric

        Remove the trim from the seat, backrest and armrests. Once you remove the fasteners, you can remove the old fabric and use these trim pieces to make new ones.

        Mark the removed blanks with arrows, letters or something else so that it is convenient for you to draw the same on new fabric.

        • There is no need to be lazy: the efforts made will pay off later when you need to maintain accuracy.
        • It will be easier if you draw a chair diagram for each piece of upholstery you remove and write the corresponding letter or number on each piece of fabric, both on the diagram and on the back of the fabric.
      1. Pay attention to hems, folds, bends, etc., so that you can repeat them later when making new upholstery. When you remove sections of trim, write down the order in which you do it.

        • This will help you a lot when you start putting it all back together. Sections of chair/chair upholstery are usually marked as follows:
        • IB = inside back
        • OB = outside back
        • IW = inside wing
        • OW = outside wing
        • IA = inside arm
        • OA = outside arm
        • S = seat
        • SC = seat cushion
        • FB = front border
        • SB = side border
        • AF = arm facing (front part of the armrest)

      SK = skirt. (edge)

      Part 4
      1. Preserving the stuffing Carefully lift up the packing.

        • Try not to break or tear anything. Her current shape was achieved through years of sitting in a chair, so her shape already fits this chair perfectly.
        • You should lift it with both hands, placing the padding on the bend of your elbow and holding it with your fingers. Prepare a smooth and clean place
      2. , on which you will place the stuffing while you work on the upholstery. Trim off the glued portion of the padding.

        Remove other fasteners. You may find that the padding is held in place with additional staples or wallpaper nails or string. You remove the nails and staples as described above, and simply cut the rope.

        Check the chair frame. Should it be repaired or left as is? If you can leave it as is, you can move on to preparing the new upholstery. And if not, you will have to repair the frame of the chair/chair.

      Part 5

      Repairing the frame

      This section is a summary of the basics for a standard modern chair/chair frame. Here we are not considering such tricky frames that require weaving, pulling and other corrections, because... I can't talk about it briefly.

        First, decide whether you want to handle this yourself or entrust the matter to a professional. It can be difficult, but basic frame repairs can be done yourself. The only thing you can’t do is leave everything as it is, because a weak frame won’t last long and the chair will break.

        • If you're not up for the job, take the chair to an upholsterer or furniture maker.
      1. First check the glued joints. If they need to be straightened or compacted or re-glued, do it yourself. Pull the chair slats in different directions to check for stability or strength. If no weak points are found, there are no questions about the connections. If they move in the grooves or bend, they need to be repaired.

        • IN old furniture staples, screws or tongue and groove joints. If you don’t understand it yourself, it’s better to show the damaged tongue and groove joint to a professional.
        • You don't need to use a lot of force while testing because a pinned (dowel) joint that is holding well can become loose if you pull too hard.
      2. Check the corner blocks. If you need to re-glue the joints, the corner will have to be removed first. This is a triangular part located at inner corner chair seat frame; it can be glued, screwed or nailed in place. To remove it you need::

        • Drive the tip of the spacer bit into the edge of the corner block where it meets one side of the frame.
        • Tap the tip of the chisel with a wooden mallet.
        • As you move the chisel, use it as a lever to pull the block out of the frame. Do not press too hard, the chisel may break; if you feel that the block is giving in, remove the chisel and press only with your hand.
        • Do the same with the remaining corners.
      3. Repair connections.

        • Place the chair on the workbench with the part you want to repair facing up (facing you, not the workbench). Hold the chair firmly.
        • Next to the connection, knock rubber mallet to loosen it up a bit. Don't do it by force.
        • Remove the disconnected part. Clean and sand to remove any remaining old glue.
      4. Replace broken keys. If you find that the key is broken, it will need to be repaired before reassembling the joint.

        • Use a chisel to remove the edges of the key to a smooth surface so that you can work with a drill. Then drill into the old dowel, being careful not to damage the chair frame.
        • Squeeze some wood glue into the hole, then insert a new dowel into it. Tap it lightly with a hammer. Wipe off any excess glue that has been squeezed out and let it dry completely.
      5. Reconnect. Pour into the holes for the dowels wood glue. Gently but firmly connect the components.

        Clamp the entire frame together to give required pressure joints and do not allow them to move during drying.

        • Wipe off excess glue to prevent it from drying in beads on the chair frame.

      Place the corner blocks in place, wiping off any excess glue again before they dry.

      Part 6

      Applying new upholstery fabric Here's a simple method using scraps of old sheathing. There are more complex methods, but for beginners this one the method will work

      1. better. Measure the fabric for the new upholstery.

        This requires great care when removing the old trim to avoid tearing or cutting anything, because you will be using the old piece as a template for the new one. Unstitch the old piece.

        • Anything pinned or sewn should be laid out so you can see the seams and allowances the upholstery makers made.
      2. Always allow enough allowance for stitching and pinning when taking measurements for new upholstery. Iron the pieces until they are even.

        They should be as even as possible. Place the old piece on top of the new fabric as a sample.

      3. Then use a chalk or invisible fabric marker to outline the outlines, and so on for each piece. Cut out new blanks.

        • Here's what to keep in mind:
        • Cut along the front side, you should see the structure of the fabric. For symmetrical pieces, you can cut half, then bend and check if the workpiece is the same with reverse side
        • . If yes, keep cutting. Or make adjustments if necessary.
        • Label all the cut pieces with the names of the sections that you have determined for yourself so as not to mix them up. Write down the correct instructions for a specific workpiece, using the abbreviations recommended above. Add additional arrows so you know which side the workpiece is for. Be careful when marking thin fabric, the marks may show up on the right side.
          • If the fabric has a design or pattern, the fabric should be positioned so that it points upward, toward the back of the chair. Keep this in mind when preparing the central chair blank. It’s better to try your hand at a plain fabric first than to create additional difficulties for yourself while you don’t have enough experience yet.
          • All removed pieces of fabric should be kept together in a plastic bag. Then you can use them again if you want, and they will be at hand.
          • Be careful when removing the cover. If you want to use it again, you need to avoid tearing or cutting. Moreover, you can damage the wood during the process, so keep this in mind when removing the fabric. If you want to use the old stuffing again, you need to carefully remove it and not touch it again without doing anything.

          Warning

          • If you have pierced the skin with an old nail, staple, etc. Go to the doctor and get a tetanus shot. If the furniture is old, it's better to be safe than sorry. If you are planning big project or drapery for a living, it's best to make sure your tetanus shots are up to date.
          • Wear safety glasses when removing nails and staples. You can't predict when a piece sharp object may fly in your face, so it's better to be safe.
          • If you are unsure about the condition of the padding or it is too old, it is better to wear a mask. When the padding is released from the fabric, it can release a cloud of dust and enter Airways. If you suffer from allergies, then the mask will be especially useful for you.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site.
