A wooden veranda is a useful, bright extension where you can comfortably spend time in the fresh air without leaving home. However, this structure will constantly be influenced by various destructive factors, so you need to decide how to cover the veranda for maximum effective protection. You will have to choose materials for exterior and interior decoration, and especially to properly protect the floor from destruction.

Exterior decoration has two goals at once: it should provide the veranda with an aesthetic appearance and protect the walls from destruction.

Before painting the structure, it is advisable to sand all wooden elements. This is especially true for old buildings: the wood gradually darkens, small, unnoticeable cracks and other defects appear in it.
Sanding will renew the surface and new materials will be applied to the prepared wood. Painting can be done with a simple paint brush or a roller of a convenient size.
The interior of the room can be very diverse: it depends on the type of wall filling. Typically, the veranda walls are a low parapet with a large glazing area. For interior wall decoration, you can use lining and other natural materials.
You can purchase top-class lining: it is made from jointed wood and is practically free of knots and other defects. The even, smooth surface of the wood will have a pleasant color; later the panels can be painted.
The lining is installed on a frame made of bars: it is pressed onto the walls in a horizontal or vertical direction. The wooden panels will be positioned perpendicular to the bars, the lining is attached to them with clamps that hide the joints of the panels.

Even if you decide to hide them behind a clapboard or block house, all wooden elements must first be treated with a deep penetration antiseptic, then the frame and walls can last a long time.

- Deck (terrace) board. This is a very durable material made from larch wood and other species that are not subject to rotting.
- Composite decking board. In fact, this is not a board at all: such material is made from sawdust and other lumber production waste, impregnated with special polymer-based compounds.
- Terrace oil and liquid plastic. These are special types of polymer-based coatings that are initially designed for high loads. Their use makes it possible to provide strength to ordinary floor boards, and they will retain their strength and decent appearance for a long time. However, it is better to use them only on closed verandas: there will be a snow cover on the open area, which is detrimental to almost all paint compositions.
This is a fairly expensive solution, but it can really last for decades. Larch is not destroyed by water, it only becomes stronger, so the floor on the veranda will not suffer from any natural vagaries.
Composite boards last a long time and are easy to install. The special porous structure provides it with very low weight, unlike larch and other wood species.
If any wood types of materials are selected, a small distance should be left between the floor panels. As humidity increases, wood swells and increases in size, so cracks will help compensate for this expansion. Slots are needed for tongue and groove boards and decking boards, this also applies to other natural materials.
Listed are common solutions that have long proven their effectiveness. However, almost all of them require large expenses, which are not always justified, for example, in an ordinary country house.
You can, for example, choose a rubber coating, linoleum, and if the veranda is on a concrete platform, colored self-leveling floors are perfect for it. All parameters have to be taken into account: the size and location of the site, the presence of a foundation and much more.
Proper finishing of the veranda will make it possible to maintain the strength of the walls and floor for many years, as well as give it a beautiful design. The choice of finishing materials has now expanded significantly, and you can choose the optimal solution for any interior and exterior decoration.

We touched upon one of the most problematic and controversial topics, the controversy around which is constantly ongoing. The fact is that the operating conditions of wood in open areas are considered extreme, and a completely reliable coating for its protection simply does not exist ().
Wood is a natural organic material that is susceptible to a variety of destructive factors.
The main ones among them are:
- Constant exposure to atmospheric and sedimentary moisture. Wood easily absorbs water and water vapor, because its structure is designed for this by nature. The presence of moisture is a necessary and sufficient condition for the development of all kinds of harmful microorganisms, due to which the material rots and decomposes;
- Significant temperature changes throughout the year lead to the fact that the geometry of the boards changes noticeably, and not all coatings are able to effectively withstand such expansion. In addition, the moisture contained inside the fibers can destroy the material from the inside when frozen;
- Wood is a favorite nutrient substrate for a number of molds, which, in the presence of moisture, quickly attack wooden parts and digest their fibers from the inside with their juices. Fungal mycelium is capable of destroying a structure in a very short time;
- Solar radiation also negatively affects the decorative and technical properties of wooden boards. It can also quickly ruin the paintwork, making its color dull and faded;
- There are many varieties of wood-eating insects, grubs, worms and other pests that gnaw through tunnels and gradually eat the material. In addition, it can be chewed by mice or rats, which are also found in abundance outside the city.
Having carefully studied all these risk factors, we can outline the requirements that a protective coating for a country terrace must meet.
They are:
- Moisture resistance. This is a mandatory condition, otherwise the material will not last even one season;
- Frost resistance. We are talking about a dacha, which in winter may not be heated at all, and with an open veranda there is nothing to talk about;
- Antiseptic and antifungal qualities. Special preparations must be included in the primer or applied separately;
- UV resistance;
- High elasticity. The material should expand and contract easily with the material on which it is applied;
- Resistant to wear and abrasion. Country life imposes special requirements for the reliability of finishing.
Important! It is almost impossible for one material to fully comply with all of the above requirements, so it is most rational to use a set of tools.
Selection of materials
Now about the most important thing - the choice of materials and processing means ().
As we have already said, we will need a complex of such tools, which should include:
- Special antiseptic and fungicidal impregnation of deep penetration. It is applied to the boards first, it is desirable that it saturates the material as deeply as possible;
- Deep penetration primer. It is also a very important component that will protect the material from getting wet and rotting, and will also improve the quality of adhesion of the coating to the surface and its reliability;
- Finish coating. There are possible options here, and we will talk about them further.
Important! When choosing an antiseptic, be sure to take into account the need for external use and try to choose a composition that can penetrate as deeply as possible into the fibers.
Now let's talk about what kind of paint can be used for an open veranda. It should immediately be noted that different compositions should be chosen for the floor and other structures, since operating conditions vary too much.
For painting walls and racks, as well as crossbars and all kinds of beams, any wood paint suitable for outdoor use is suitable.
We will not list all types and will focus on the most suitable:
- Acrylic latex compounds. They showed themselves perfectly in practice, are harmless, odorless, and have a wide choice of colors;
- Scuba diving. Also great for treating wooden surfaces that are not subject to increased wear;
- Oil-waxes. Preserves the beauty and texture of the wood surface. The disadvantage is the high price.
Important! In truth, all three groups can be called expensive, but their cost is fully justified by their long service life and the unique beauty of the finish.
Now the most painful topic is the paint for the floor on the open veranda. As you understand, this structure is subject to simply unimaginable load and wear, because in addition to the constant influence of the atmosphere and other factors listed above, people also walk on the floor in dirty street shoes, and the water on it stands in the form of puddles and does not flow down like from the walls .
There is no clear opinion or conclusion about what to paint the floor on an open veranda, but we were able to identify the two most suitable options - terrace oil and liquid plastic. Both coatings performed well, but oil still comes first. There are also some types of paints, but they are incredibly expensive, and it is currently impossible to find adequate reviews about their use.
Important! It is not worth using varnishes and film coatings on open plank floors; most such experiments end in failure after the first winter. Even if someone else did it differently, this does not guarantee you the same result.
Execution of work
As always, for those who are planning to work with their own hands, our step-by-step instructions:
- The boards must be treated with an electric sander or an abrasive disc. The dark top layer of the material should be completely removed to a light shade and sanded with fine sandpaper;
- Next, we wash off the chips and dust from the surface, dry it and apply antiseptic impregnation with a brush on all sides, especially carefully treating all ends;
- After the impregnation penetrates the material and dries, apply the primer in two or three layers (follow the manufacturer’s instructions);
- Mix the terrace oil thoroughly, dilute it slightly (if provided by the manufacturer) and apply it with a brush very carefully, painting the entire surface, ends, and recesses. Our task is to saturate the material as much as possible;
- After applying the first layer, wait a day, after which we apply the oil again. It is better to use a tinted product to obtain a semi-matte shine; this treatment will look more beautiful and preserve the beauty of the coating longer;
- After two to three years of operation, all you have to do is renew the finishing layer of the coating without sanding or removing old layers.
Important! When treating the floor with antiseptics and fungicides, be sure to use gloves, a gown, safety glasses and a respirator, as the drugs are very toxic and can cause serious poisoning. Smoking or eating while working or in the immediate vicinity of the work area is prohibited, and pets, children and bystanders should also be kept at a safe distance.

- ash;
- larch.
Oak, hornbeam and beech are also good, but are much more expensive and, in addition, are susceptible to cracking.
